2024/25 Nathan Patterson

Honestly, we have zero functional fullbacks at the club. We have Coleman, who's body is in ruins, Patterson, who we have seen repeatedly fail to impress, and O'Brien, who is a centre half who is serviceable as a fullback, but isn't a fullback. If we don't sign a starting right back then this window will have been a failure.

Both full back positions has to be a priority now.

Another left back is a priority because we only have one but realistically it’s going to be competition not a replacement. We certainly have bigger fish to fry than buying a new left back who’s a clear step up.
Doesn't make a lot of sense that we’d sign another fairly average left back though to compete or be a back up to, our already fairly average left back.
Maybe a loan deal I guess but think that’s a mistake.

Compete and back up are totally different things. Sign someone just to back up mykolenko and we’ve failed, sign someone to compete and we haven’t. The chances of us being in a position to bring in someone who is just clearly better than a £15m, 50 cap, 100+ PL game full back are extremely slim. Bringing in a decent player with a slightly different skill set is much more likely. Tagliafico on a free would be absolutely fine for where we are, for example.

It feels like that because it is - he was abysmal for 99.9% of every game he played in.
Nah he really wasn’t. He had a poor start to his time here and some people couldn’t let it go. Last season he was generally one of our better players. He obviously had his limitations and his weaknesses meant we had to play a certain way, but if you think he was individually poor for most of last season I’d have to say you were either judging on a pre-conceived idea or just don’t actually have any idea what you’re watching, because he just objectively wasn’t.

I didn’t see the game today so not passing comment myself but surely you’d have to say a PL player holding his own between the 15th and 58th minutes against a championship side is not actually a compliment.

I didnt say he "held his own". The other 3 defenders you could argue either way.

He was a one man show on the right. McNeil moved inside and so Patterson was all alone out there, have to wonder why Moyes purposely isolated him.

Despite that, he ran with the ball down the line several times and beat their players before a cross.

Absolutely nothing negative to say about him. He was one of the better performers.

I notice some have been banned for stating the obvious about Patterson. So lets not go into that but its 100% clear he's not hated for his football.

You can see the poster screenshotted comments from twitter (?) up to the 10th or so minute (when i wasnt watching). Many state they didnt watch the game or had already turned off the game...others assuming he was crap and to get out (as some posters here did the same when not watching the match).

Its clear negative bias for non footballing reasons, but to say what it is and call it out seems to get a ban.

Alcaraz was scored a 5 while McNeil a 6 in the media. McNeil was totally anonymous and Alcaraz was our main threat alongside Patterson. Ndiaye had some good touches and a decent shot.

If we'd have signed Patterson from Hibernian and yesterday was his first game...15th minute onwards people would be saying;

"Moyes must trust him to leave him out on the right all alone".

His positioning reminds me of Djibril Cisse. Could literally find him anywhere on the pitch when the opponent is bombing down our right.

Cisse was well better at everything else though. Well maybe not sock management.
I think you’ve got your Djibril’s mixed up!

Sidibe is the former sockless Everton right back, rather than the old RS Lord of the Manor of Frodsham!

Gah, thats what I get for posting late at night!

Although Cisses defensive positioning was probably better than both of them too!

You quite literally did say he held his own actually zat.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Patterson run down his contract and retire from football altogether.

That would be the professional and sensible thing to do if his mental health had been affected.

Rather than leech a salary from a club you claim to love...as a cheerleader for half a decade.
