Mason Holgate...." Holgy"

Sad to see the decline of his career. Came to us as a youngster and looked like he was gonna be a very good Premier League player - I don't recall many people complaining when he was awarded the £70k a week contract, because at the time his form and potential warranted tying him down to a long term deal but the drop-off was massive. He couldn't even turn it around by dropping a division and working his way back up.

The best of luck to him over there, it's sad he had an end to his career with us which meant he left without even a goodbye to the fans.

I see Holgate a bit like Godfrey. Was decent enough player for first few years and seemingly lost all that ability overnight in second part of 2021.

Keane, Holgate and Godfrey all as regular starters for months on end in that period. It genuinely is a minor miracle the club stayed in the prem as that backline was as bad as what Leicester put out in their prem relegation season.

Can remember him being hopeless away to Burnley away. Then under Dyche he got sent off away to Palace late on in the 2023 season, luckily Tarks and Pickford dug in to get a crucial 0-0. Then unbelievably Dyche brought him back for Man. City at home and played him left back!!!

Thankfully that selection was not repeated in the Bournemouth game otherwise it would've ended very badly.

Sure if Martinez had stayed in club management he'd have signed Holgate again years ago.

Covid did Godfrey in, he was never the same player after he caught it.

He`s been open and honest about it.

Said when he came back, it felt like he was breathing in razor blades when he did any type of running.

Although thought he came across as a too-big-for-his-boots type of character. Obviously could be completely wrong and I just have a negative impression of him because he was crap, but that's what I thought.

Godfrey, on the other hand, although similarly rubbish, I thought seemed a very pleasant chap.

I liked Mason Holgate and had high hopes for the guy; pity it didn't work out for him with us. Good luck to the lad.
This is exactly what I expect to happen with O’Brien.

Holgate, Browning, Galloway, Godfrey etc All supposedly CH and all passed around at full back and CH and not actually coached to excel in one position.

I don’t see how things will be different for O’Brien with Tarkowski and Branthwaite.

A rare modern Everton player to have a bit of an edge about him and cause a bit of trouble with opponents, Tarkowski aside our CH have been far too nice for too long.
