BBC Get Involved - one that got away

Just seen this on the BBC 'latest updates', asking about who is that one signing that got away.... I do not want to open a can of worms on this forum for Everton as I know the typical answers we will get.

But a Newcastle fan posted this, and it got me thinking (painful)... were Newcastle close at all to signing Rooney and if so why would he go there? Or was he getting pushed anywhere.

Apparently they were closed, but it wasn't because they were slow. Ferguson talks about it in his book. Rooney told him he was joining the horse punchers and big Dunc said "no, you aren't". He told Rooney they were crap and he could do better.

I`d say because of how we were being run at the time, anyone the would have offered enough money to keep Blue Bill`s club running were being given the chance of signing anyone they wanted.

3rd.

Ravanelli by all accounts (and by accounts I mean from my memory) was in the wane in Italian football career (from what I recall though I’m sure stats could show me otherwise). Muller was in his Brazilian international prime, and Riquelme was a borderline superstar.
Think you’re right on the Italian goals but they were a decent team and he had some competition .

Think he was about 1:2 before and after our attempt to get him . I don’t think we even got a striker did we ? Until we brought in John Spencer :red:

I seem to remember the report at the time was, that Newcastle were prepared to pay £20m upfront. They thought they had a chance as kenwright/the club were desperate for cash. As Man Utd’s offer at time was to be paid on the drip.
