The Club World Club

It'll be interesting how these big sides do come the winter and spring when matches come thick and fast. Preseason starts now and Chelsea and PSG just finished last season.
I dont think they're arsed.

Here's why: they worked out that the PL is dead. It's FUBAR. It doesn't matter if you win it or get 4th. Just as long as you keep the cash machine tuned up.

So were Inter Milan, Real Madrid, PSG, Man City, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Benfica, Atletico Madrid, Boca, River Plate, Botafogo, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense.
So not the champions of England (nor 2nd place), Spain or Italy (nor second place) - 3 of the top 5 leagues in the world. Surely that undermines the tournament's actual quality. If the CL is undermined by the fact non-champions participate, we have just witnessed a tournament that didn't include actual champions of significant leagues.

Maresca gets sacked if they fail to properly compete in the PL and Guardiola only considers first as acceptable. This tournament undermines these managers.

Yes. Of course.

As were most Everton supporters who wanted Liverpool out of the league.
The Super League would not have seen any team leave the PL - this is a persistent misconception that is always put forward. It would have replaced the CL.

Domestic football's pyramid wouldn't have been materially altered.

Every tournament gets started as an invitational.

The first European Cup was invitational. So was the first FA Cup. So was the Football League. And so was the first World Cup.

Have you and others protesting this tournament as 'bogus' really thought through your arguments?

It doesn't look like it does it?

It would over time. Inevitably so.

Two seasons of the Euro SL and the effect on PL form would have been dramatic.

Why? The PL is a cash cow that provides member clubs with significant financial rewards.

Plus, this is always the daft response when their misconception is pointed out to them - pretending that they knew all along. It's illogical that a club would step away from a domestic league.

Have you and others pursuing this bogus claim really thought through your arguments?

Well, I suppose playing a lengthy tournament at the end of a long European season with exhausted players on unsuitable pitches in unsuitable temperatures in half empty stadiums with the benefit to the participants being PSR insurance to already mostly mega wealthy state owned monoliths.
I was thinking that as well. Maybe?

Why Juve than Napoli or Atalanta?
Why only 1 french side?
The idea that Fifa were going to loan Ronaldo to a participating team...

Its a money spinner with no merit. You cant swing it any other way

What's that got to do with the point I made about tournaments needing to start somewhere and that ALL of the ones we know best were invitationals at first?

You seem to have conveniently side stepped that awkward fact...

Because if they included them all you'd have a competition with about 200 clubs in.

It's arbitrary.

The first World Cup in 1930: why were Belgium and Yugoslavia invited but not Germany or Spain?

You seem to be ignoring all the points I made about the tournament being a bago’shyte + you asked me to “think through my argument”, so I did, and you wilfully ignored my conclusions;
Exhausted players at the end of a long season
Unsuitable temperatures
Rubbish pitches
Poor crowds
Ridiculous prize money for already wealthy state owned clubs to help them circumnavigate PSR.

You think that these things are all good and that it is more credible than the Champions League - your original point.

Sure, ok.

The first World Cup in 1930: why were Belgium and Yugoslavia invited but not Germany or Spain?
They were.

Great Depression, recessions, civil wars, post-war bans and other political factors were tearing both mentioned countries apart - Germany wasn't a part of anything in the 20s (Olympics, etc.) and had to decline the WC due to costs and logistics of everything.

Belgium and Yugoslavia were founding members of FIFA.

This is all very easy information to find by the way.
