My thoughts on the bowling selections: sometimes you just pick your four best bowlers. If Bashir isn't among that, you go four seamers and let Root do the part time at one end stuff while Archer and Wood take spells. Is Archer and Wood in the same side better than taking Bashir? I'd think so. But day 5 hasn't happened yet of course.

I think Bashir has a finger injury so it might turn out he's not available for the next game anyway. I'd bring in Atkinson if he's out and swap Crawley for Bethell.

There's definitely a lot of potential with Bashir to become a long term world class spinner so I don't want to keep sounding like I'm having a dig at him but I'd be wanting genuine pace against the Indians.
Agree with you totally mate about Basher, he's a lad learning his trade in the spotlight, the thing I haven't seen yet is him hurrying any batsman at all with a ball that is faster, the one that really spins in the air and comes on to the batsman.
Three different pitches, maybe not much difference in conditions, but nothing that really races on to take the edge, inside or outside.
I don't really want him dropped for an all out pace attack as that's old world cricket.

I'm not sure it's old world cricket, New Zealand won a test championship and were one of the best sides in the world with Souther Boult Wagner and Henry. If they're good enough, pick them. Australia tried to pick a spinner for years after Warne retired and went through some absolute pie chuckers because they thought they had to until Lyon arrived.

Mind. on the downside to that I remember England going to India in 92-93 and playing 5 'seamers' and losing 346-0 in a 3 test series.
They went there thinking that the Cat Tuffnell was the best left arm spinner in the world, played 5 fast bowlers and came third!!
As the series unfolded, India found 3 spinners working on farms and as gravediggers the day before that were better than Tuffnell.
Which, as it happened, every Cricket commentator in England could've predicted beforehand.
Those were the days when I used to get up early and listen to the likes of Trueman, Don Mosey and Johnners on my radio.

Playing 5 seamers in India is cricketing suicide. Dark days of English cricket that period.

England Cricket now....
What's the plan of action then Skipper, do we have one?
"Aye, let's gan mental tho there but"
If we win the toss, what are we doing?
"Aye, let's gan mental, tho there but, bowlin' battin' let's just gan mental"

I'm not sure on the other spin options. But I don't see the merit in selecting a spinner in English conditions just so you have one. You don't need a spinner in Australia either. And you can't balance the team easily with a spinner who is a no 11 bat, unless they are a fairly elite bowler.

Atkinson struggled a little bit during the winter but I would give him a go again in home conditions for the next test.

If Stokes and McCullum think Bethell has huge potential then he should play. I saw enough in the New Zealand series to suggest he has a far higher ceiling than Crawley.
Do old school English conditions really exist anymore? I think a spinner who can occupy is pretty essential myself in Oz at least, the role Swann played there way back was crucial.

As you say you can't pick a guy for the sake of it, but thats why Stokes and Baz have tried to bring someone on, it may yet come off
