It’s not the tribute part I don’t get, but the retiring a number bit. If some kid is inspired by Jota and wears his number isn’t that a bigger tribute? Or maybe some Portuguese guy comes in and he wants to uphold his memory by wearing his number?
We all have different ways to memorialise a person, retiring a number forever is a great example of doing it, long after we are gone and the people at LFC the reason for retiring it will be known.

In fairness Booby Moore is the biggest West Ham legend ever.

Jota, God rest him, wouldn’t be in the top twenty RS legends.

Nor even top fifty.
Not really the point though is it.
Lad died in tragic circumstances while still a current player, recently having had the year of his life.

It's a fitting tribute to his memory.
Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

You’ve nailed it there mate

People just seemingly want to get annoyed by stuff these days

It’s a nice gesture for a player who died whilst under their employ

He could’ve been a youth player who never kicked a ball, and I still wouldn’t have an issue with it

People are just weird about stuff

Sometimes a small gesture is done because it’s a nice thing to do and it doesn’t really require any real debate or detailed hard analysis

He died. They’ve done this for him. It’s nice of them to do it. That’s about it
