Just sat outside the local, there's a little Tesco opposite. Fella comes out with his lad, dives in here and says 'right son, we're goin the pub - don't tell your mum'

They should be facing the same fury as those idiots who cut the sycamore gap tree. That establishment was a national treasure.View attachment 312993
Tragic news.
The iconic and truly wonderful Kirkstone Pass Inn, Cumbria, having been sold four years ago and shrouded in a veil of secrecy ever since, is re opening.
However it’s not re opening as a pub, the beautiful and historic interior has been gutted and turned into four air ultra modern air bnb units, with the bar area turned into a gin palace, with the intention of renting the whole place out for stag and hen weekends.
The owners of the past four years have hidden their intentions from the likes of CAMRA and the local community and there’s up roar about it.
The building is not listed, which I find very surprising, as the pub dates back to medieval times.
Not only the pub, but the whole pass is subject to all year round extreme weather and regularly gets snowed in.
I really don’t think they’ve thought this one through and can’t see it lasting long tbh.
I could’ve cried when I saw what they’d done to the place, one of my favourite pubs in the whole of the UK
.

It seems the company behind it have a model of turning historic buildings into Airbnb type let's.
When you consider how many that place has served over centuries, it's bloody criminal. I've spent many an hour there since I was a lad but haven't been up for a couple of years. Devastating news, it really is.They’ve rowed back a bit since it all came out, saying that the bar will be a public bar and not for the sole use of the Airbnb party guests.
However the bar looks like something that you’d find in any city centre.
It’s absolute nuts, as virtually all the customers go in there in walking boots and loads go in with dogs.
It regularly gets snowed in and even in the Summer the wind and rain can blow your feet.
The road to get to it from Ambleside is a first gear job in your car as it’s that steep and gets shut all the time due to ice etc.
It’s most definitely not the place for a weekend of partying !

Must admit not a fan of Kentish ale, Think it's Spitfire that put me off. It's always nice to see ales from darn sarf, just a pity it was so bland and somewhat tasteless.

Why the straw? In fact, why the long straw?First can opened from a mixed case by Marble Brewery in Salford. This one is quite light and citrusy. Found their beers when I visited their pub, The Marble Arch, last week. Worth a visit of you are in the vicinity.View attachment 314662
Only one quibble for me : I enjoy going into a pub and seeing something I've never tried before. Isn't part of the pleasure of drinking is when you find an ale you've never had before, and it hits your sweet spot. Who wants to drink the same thing every time you go to the pub ? Or is that just me ?Very good article and well balanced.
