What’s the point in retiring his shirt number? Will it be in perpetuity? Obviously it’s a sad situation, but I’ve never really got the whole taking a number out of circulation thing anyway. Imagine if Man Utd had done so after Munich.

Because he’s dead and the number was his, this isn’t hard mate. Highlighted the bit that’s important - I pray you never have to comprehend the loss of a person, famous or otherwise that meant a lot to people.

It’s not the tribute part I don’t get, but the retiring a number bit. If some kid is inspired by Jota and wears his number isn’t that a bigger tribute? Or maybe some Portuguese guy comes in and he wants to uphold his memory by wearing his number?

It's a mark of respect. United couldn't retire shirt numbers after Munich because the rules at the time were that players wore 1-11.

Isnt that kid gonna be inspired by him and his achievements regardless?
The kid isn't inspired by his shirt number and he can still get No20 on his Jota shirt, just not if he happens to one day play for them.

I’m pretty sure kids can wear the No20 when they buy a kit with his name on as well. Adults can also do this.

The players who Liverpool sign would - I would imagine - be very uncomfortable wearing No20 regardless if they were Portuguese or not. Who’d want that added burden?

Given it was announced on the day of the family visiting Liverpool, I’d imagine it got their blessing.

...and by the time the kid was old enough to sign for them he'd be old enough to understand the why.
Also serves to keep his memory alive long term.
Right thing to do.
Can't understand why anyone would have any problem with it.
