2024/25 Idrissa Gueye

Yes, he has been very good and it's not that he does anything wrong.

But as good as he is at certain things, his quality on the ball is nowhere near good enough for this league. A few years ago midfield was all about energy, pressing and moving your feet. Brilliant for Gueye. But no it's much more about keeping possession and being able to control matches. I'm not a fan of possession heavy football just for the sake of it, but it is alarming that Everton are nok able to control matches at all. To see us need to sit back and let opponents control where the match is played even in matches we are favorites to win.

It's not like Gueye was bad at PSG. He did pretty good and could justify a place in starting eleven. But the club saw that for the club to be what they wanted to be and to play the kind of football they wanted to play, they needed to move Gueye on.

Signing Gueye will define what Everton will look like and how they will play. He is to good to be kept out of the team, and with him we will continue to see a very defensive team that are defending deep and that has an average of 40% possession. Two more years of playing every march as we are the underdog.

No direct comparison, but we have seen something similar with Soucek at West Ham. The club have spent a lot of money and brought in exciting midfielders from abroad. Players that need time, but end up on the bench because Soucek keep delivering 6s and 7s every week. Many have suggested that West Ham need to sell Soucek to take the next step.

Even if we were able to, I dont think its a good idea to become a posession based team. You cant beat e.g the top 6 at their own game over the course of a season.

For arguments sake, lets say we did sit deep and the 2 CMs (Gana+1) were also deep. It may well be that we do very well on transitions.

Ndiaye and Alcaraz are very good players in transition, winning the ball and getting it to them a new RW and then on to Beto/Barry with a ball in behind could be something that does win games against the top 6.

As for Gana, he needs to be kept on simply to have 1 of the 2 CM positions ticked off. It also means Moyes can gradually bring through the likes of Iroegbunam and Armstrong.

We need to sign a partner for Gana this summer. Then next summer a replacement for Gana.

gana has a particular role that he excels at , which is reclaiming the ball and disrupting attacks , he is not a ball carrying midfielder but he is a vital cog in the team especially for a counter attacking team if he performs his role intercepting the ball then recycled the ball to a player nearby who is more proficient on the ball I don't see an issue. Even on champions League teams there ate players who specialize in a certain role maybe they're more versatile but Everton have larger concerns squad wise right now. I don't think he's the issue on why we don't always impose control on the midfield either that needs to rectified with other additions to the squad

If we had 2 Gana's in midfield then it would be 'all action' for a season.

The likes of Frendrup & Ndidi being linked may mean we go for the counter attacking tactic and quickly win the ball while transitioning directly bypassing them anyway.

Counter attacking sides are fun to watch.

This set up would suit us down to a tee.

For me a peak Everton team is Simeone’s style. Work hard, solid defensively but capable of hurting you on the counter and also of sustaining real pressure on the attack.

Never a team that keeps the ball but one that controls the game.

Gana is crucial to that isn’t he really, or someone similar (although his stats suggest he’s still one of the best in Europe at what he does).

You need to be quick and clinical to be a good counter attacking team. We were trying to do it with Jack Harrison and Calvert Lewin.

No wonder we were bottom of the open play goals list, by a considerable margin.
Yeah the way we set up (even under Dyche at times) meant we created so many counter attacks, we just never ever converted any of them.

The amount of times Harrison or Doucoure would get lost trying to figure out what to do….

Precisely. That may be why (if rumours are true) were looking at tackle machines for the middle.

Sometimes its about the players. Obviously if we had Kanchelskis and even a young Jeffers up top I wonder where we may have finished with the additional goals.
