For any celebrity, footballer or not

Innocent loss of life is not exclusive to celebrity, when there’s an outpouring of empathy or support for famous people in face of unconscionable genocide humanity loses
The celebrity as Ubermensch is the somewhat natural product of society's moral transition from theological to secular.

I agree that the loss of life under circumstances of war and genocide is perhaps more morally concerning than the millionaire who crashes their Lamborghini. However it doesn't make the latter any less tragic to the human psyche. As an individual who lives their life in the public eye, whose actions as an individual are ingrained in our memories, the celebrity has a narrative and human arc that is more relatable than a mass of peoples, so their loss can feel more personal to us all.

It's not a zero sum game either; one can lament loss of life equally if one chooses.

I personally think the situation for millions of people on this planet is appalling; in Ukraine, Gaza, even those living in abject poverty closer to home.

I also think Jota's death is heartbreaking. I feel deeply for his parents, his wife and children. One can only imagine what they are going through

You don’t have to agree anymore than I do with you. I’m a trained physician who strives to preserve life

We worship loss of celebrities over innocent men, women and children where it is far more abnormal if not abjectly evil

Tomorrow it’ll be some actor who passes which will be tragic but we can’t even protect innocent people from ongoing genocide.

We’ve become immune to horrific warring but lament a millionaire footballer - imbalance is putting it mildly
I'm one of the biggest critics of celebrity culture you can meet, I don't know why celebrity opinions are treated better than non celebrities. But we are just acknowledging it's sad that a young dad who just got married dying is a tragedy.

I don’t know Jota anymore than you might, moreover I know none of the innocent men, women and children slaughtered in Palestine. What’s your point?
Turkey has illegally occupied Cyprus for decades and they've massacred Kurds and imprisoned journalists, yet there doesn't seem to be much outrage about that. People still go on holiday to Turkey and feel no guilt. Why is it Palestine your particularly interested in? Saudis supported by America have been massacring Yeminis, yet I don't see any protests about that.

….seems he was travelling to catch a ferry back to England after being advised against flying following surgery.

Nice to see the clubs still involved in Club World Cup paying their tributes today.

Well, start a thread about that. Your comments are, at best, off topic.
