2024/25 James Garner

If your employer tried to take disciplinary action against you because you played football with somebody they think is undesirable then they'd be leaving themselves open for all sorts of lawsuits and you should probably look for a new job if you have any sort of self respect. Like I said, you're extraordinarily naive if you don't think people involved with the club are involved with some shady people. The fact you didn't read an article about it on goal.com doesn't change that fact.

Not at all. If we represent our employers in such a public way, we have to accept that comes with responsibilities. I know people have this idea that they can say and do as they please. Which they can, but as an employer you are perfectly within your rights to ask an employee not to do those things and explain the consequences if they continue to do them.

Not with something like that you're not. Your employer cannot legally tell you not to spend time with a friend who they don't like. If you think meeting someone who the public don't like but who has not been found guilty of a crime could be classed as gross misconduct then it's probably best you don't look for a job in HR anytime soon.

No I understand the concept, I'm just saying I don't agree. I don't think anyone is reading that article and thinking Everton are doing anything wrong, and if they are then they're going to think that way about an awful lot of things. As I said, I don't think it reflects well on Garner as a person, but it just isn't anything to do with the club as a whole. Having Duncan Ferguson lead the celebrations at Goodison's last game and then disciplining Garner for being photographed with someone who doesn't even have a criminal record would be a pretty ambitious move.
Fair enough, I get that!

….we don’t know the bigger picture here, they might not be bosom buddies just a group of young professionals in the same place at the same time.

I’d be quite happy he’s keeping fit in his break rather than out of his head like a previous midfielder filmed earlier in the summer. Good to see images of O’Brien also keeping his fitness levels up.

More positives than negatives in this story for me.

He hasn't done anything wrong but associating with Greewood is a lack of judgement. I'm not going to cover why that is, it's already well documented.
Greenwood is a scumbag, not doubting that. Garner and he were in Utd youth set up. Greenwood despite being a scumbag is not a criminal, just a scumbag. Should Garner distance himself from his (assumed) troubled friend or should he maybe be part of his rehab pathway ? If we all dropped out friends at the first sign of adversity then we'd all be quite lonely. People are too quick to judge and assume. Some of us idolised a convict in late 90s and nobody batted an eyelid. (Fully aware that Greenwoods actions and Duncs are day and night).

This is true also, was he just training at the same venue at the same time? I didn't see any pictures of them hugging and laughing away etc. Bit of sympathy for him if that's the case.

I wonder if he was caught off guard. Who knows. If it was an organised session then I'd question his judgement.

Greenwood doesn't accept he did anything wrong, how can he rehab.

Honestly I'm not going to debate Greenwood. It's off topic and already well covered.

You spouted off about Garner. What did you expect to happen ? There's no debate from probably anyone in here about Greenwoods conduct. Im at a loss how you can say another party has poor judgement based on association. I suspect you know some characters with shady backgrounds but you maintain association because it by and large is nothing to do with you what they choose to get up to.
