Confirmed Signing Thierno Barry

The issue has always been holding onto players long enough to build anything.

We danced around 5th to 8th for a decade while bleeding talent and buying stop gap replacements.

In 2025 he would be a forward, but yes, you are correct.

I think this indicates that its not JUST down to Moyes, cos as you say, this doesnt fit his Striker MO, but he did play a young Victor, Danny and Rooney, now granted they werent bought.

Back in his first stint, there's no way at any point he lashes the same proportional amount on a striker from La Liga IMO.

Though I suppose, if we signed his first choice in Delap, we wouldn't be now.

I mean, even at West Ham he'd be bringing in the likes of .... name escapes me. He always scored past us, and seemingly no one else. Often injured.

Prices in the prem have just gone ridiculous now for strikers. Even average ones move for eye watering amounts (e.g Chris Wood). Can you imagine if a prime Yakubu was playing now? Two footed, brilliant technique in first touch and finishing, great penalty box movement, pace and power, not bad in the air, oh and scored regularly for two PL teams already. He’d be an absolutely ridiculous amount of money, probably up where Isak would be if he was sold now. Back then though we pretty much picked him up unopposed without a top 4 team showing any interest.

I wanted us to sign Chris Wood before Forest did, posted saying so on here. No brainer.

Yakubu was our record fee at the time wasn't he? So I guess it's proportional. £11m odd or whatever it was back in 2007, is probably £70m now.

I tend to look at in proportion to the top fees at the time rather than inflation.

Back in 2007 you had Chelsea buying Drogba for about 24 mill I think, Torres went to Liverpool for something similar. United obviously paid more than that for Rooney, Berbatov etc. So Yakubu wasn’t really anywhere near the fees for the top end of strikers and we had a completely unopposed run at him.

Nowadays we wouldn’t even have a chance of buying a striker as good as Yakubu. In an era where Chelsea are buying Liam Delap you’ve got to search hard for any striking talent whatsoever and most probably take a gamble. You’d be paying 70-80 mill for a prime Yakubu now, except you wouldn’t because City or Chelsea would have bought him already.
