2024/25 Michael Vincent Keane

Its rare you'd have an academy prospect at centre half who you'd lash into a Premier League team anyway.

Those prospects would be out on loan before being a backup/coming into a Prem side.

They could have went on loan before this season if we did have any youngsters of that calibre.

Resigning this fella is just another reminder of the tripe that has come before

There isn't anyone though is there?

I didn't want us to sign Coady when most were raging we didnt pay the £5m or whatever, knowing we had Branthwaite to come in.

We need a squad, we need to sign a lot of players and you don't want to be spending on 4th choice centre halfs, and we're not going to be spending big on an Esteve or someone when we have Branthwaite, O'Brien and Tarkowski.

I know we need a squad , i said to people on here previously that would be the narrative of the summer. What good is filling it with what’s come before that we know are not good enough.

I don’t know if there’s anyone , that’s not my job , that is the people in recruitments job.

It’s just frustrating seeing stuff like this and as I said, no younger players ready to come in to fill the squad

Then maybe they merely think that Keane is a decent shout as 4th place cb, given the current options available.

Why would we want good young players sitting on the bench? They're better off elsewhere getting experience ready to fill the gap when Tarky is finished or Branthwaite gets off.

I just don't understand it from Keanes side, he's 32 and 4th choice, surely he'd want to go and play somewhere regularly for 2/3 years

from our side it saves us from having to spend money on a 4th choice this summer, he'll be replaced next summer

He probably doesn't want to go back to Burnley

Why would we want a proven liability on the bench? He’s far outstayed his welcome here mate.

Ultimately it comes down to whether he'd accept the salary we'd offer for a backup.
This is it.

If he re-signs on what he was on, it's a very lazy piece of business with much less upside than it would be if he re-signs on a much-reduced salary that befits his new status, that of reserve.

I wonder if players really take pay cuts, though, especially as this fella will know we'll be "saving" money regardless just by not having to buy a replacement.

Go on, Michael Keane. Ex-England International, loads of Premier League experience, happy to be a squad player. He even chips in with the odd goal now and then, sometimes against the opposition.

MKK .webp

….posters want everything changed in one window but the reality is the new regime were left with a contract mess that will take time to fix.

Moyes demonstrated what he can do with this squad last season, the inclusion of 4 very good acquisitions could see significant improvement but with limited funds it makes sense to spend whatever we have on those key players.

I never wanted Keane’s contract extending but I accept it might be the pragmatic solution.
