Gueye is a much, much better footballer than some of us give him credit for. The way some go on you would think he just throws tackles in and boots the ball into row Z.Yes, he has been very good and it's not that he does anything wrong.
But as good as he is at certain things, his quality on the ball is nowhere near good enough for this league. A few years ago midfield was all about energy, pressing and moving your feet. Brilliant for Gueye. But no it's much more about keeping possession and being able to control matches. I'm not a fan of possession heavy football just for the sake of it, but it is alarming that Everton are nok able to control matches at all. To see us need to sit back and let opponents control where the match is played even in matches we are favorites to win.
It's not like Gueye was bad at PSG. He did pretty good and could justify a place in starting eleven. But the club saw that for the club to be what they wanted to be and to play the kind of football they wanted to play, they needed to move Gueye on.
Signing Gueye will define what Everton will look like and how they will play. He is to good to be kept out of the team, and with him we will continue to see a very defensive team that are defending deep and that has an average of 40% possession. Two more years of playing every march as we are the underdog.
No direct comparison, but we have seen something similar with Soucek at West Ham. The club have spent a lot of money and brought in exciting midfielders from abroad. Players that need time, but end up on the bench because Soucek keep delivering 6s and 7s every week. Many have suggested that West Ham need to sell Soucek to take the next step.
His passing is fine, he just sees so much of the ball that any errant passes stand out more.
