2024/25 James Garner

He is one of those players who you will notice more when he is missing from the team than when he is in it. He is a glue guy. I would like to see him develop into more of a catalyst, but he definitely gets more stick than he deserves. Low on the list of problems. Ideally you want more like him in the rotation and maybe an upgrade as well, but we can make a bigger difference by building a consistent attack and width first. Baby steps.

You’re right with ‘glue’ guy.

Anyone that rates him must be sniffing glue.

If we have aspirations to be a top half team, he’s a squad player at best.

Nothing about the boo boys…. It’s average players which don’t really perform.

Garner is one of these….

Ok player, but you will get 1 out of 5 good games from him if / when he is fit.
It's not about their quality, it's about the targeted vendettas people end up having against players. Garner's a good player for our status. Every single payer bar Pickford and Branthwaite need replacing to get to where people want us to be, that isn't happening for a while.

I don’t think garner will be targeted…. Expect this will be Patterson (seems to be on here) if anyone.

Although I think there are more to add to those who do not need replacing… ndiaye, tarks and potentially O’Brien and Alcaraz can all be players in the squad fighting for European places!

I think he actually gets remarkably little stick considering the levels he’s reached since being here. People always seem to say airy fairy stuff like ‘you notice more when he’s not playing’ about him to excuse the fact that he very rarely influences a game. He’s alright, I’ve seen worse players, but he’s very much a bottom half premier league player for me.

Squad players yes. Ndiaye needs a good second season before cementing himself in the Pickford/Branthwaite category. We have potential, and we also have a massive lack of depth. I expect Garner to improve this season, but I also expect him to get a hard time on here and be micro analysed because the forum needs someone to hyper focus on.

You're correct, but only because you're going to see drastic improvement from whoever replaces him

He has been here 3 seasons…. Why is he going to improve this season? Back up right back hopefully

Last 3 seasons he's had multiple injuries and played covering roles, he's young and developing in what's been a very unstable club. With Moyes here I think he will grow.
Concerning thing is the injuries….

I predict he won’t have a long enough injury free stint to get a proper run in the team to develop.

average squad player yes but this is all he will be.

Someone should have moulded Garner into a RB at young academy level. He is fit, technically very good, and could overlap and cross very well. Take him back 10 years and start again and he’d have been a good modern fullback. He will have a decent career in midfield, but he is just barely PL level in there. Rarely terrible if we are honest, but rarely excellent.

I think he would have been much better with the game in front of him rather than all around him so he could use his talents better. Isn’t an amazing ball winner, doesn’t seem to bust into a load of space in a tight midfield, not really key in our counter attacks, and doesn’t score either. He’s a very good footballer, and I bet good at all sports growing up, just think someone put a ceiling on him by making him a CM.

You probably won't. People say this all the time about x and y player and then we nosdive in form the second they leave. Garner is solid and does most things well. If he had stats people would not even be complaining about him. That is the only reason people whine about him
