Glastonbury 2025

Guardian's review of Charli xcx is as predictable as it is toe-curling

Charli’s Saturday night set closing the Other stage is, on a purely technical level, second billed to Neil Young, who is headlining the Pyramid at the same time. But ask anyone here, and the headliner of the entire weekend is Charli.

Utter nonsense from a clueless cub reporter.

I don't like Charli XCX but she is probably a bigger pull for the Glastonbury demographic than Neil Young.

As much of a legend as Neil Young is the average Brit below the age of 40 is not going to know much of his music, especially given rock musics huge dip in popularity and relevance over the past decade or so.

Absolutely no doubt over her status and demographic, she's seemingly the biggest pop star on the planet and a huge win for Glastonbury.

But from what I saw (could stand to be honest) she was 'kin terrible, seemed to be largely miming too.

And don't get me wrong, I saw her set in one of the smaller tents a few years ago and she was great, so she can certainly do it. Similarly with Billie Eilish - not my thing but she deserved the plaudits. My gripe is pandering to the event to stay culturally on edge rather than calling out a bit of a duff set, 3/4 stars would have at least attempted some criticism while still recognising she pulled a huge crowd who were down for it.

Or maybe the fella really liked it, in which case fair enough, but I knew that would be a 5 star gushing review before I'd even clicked on the page.

I was looking forward to seeing her and wanted to flick between her and Neil young.

I watched ten minutes and she was largely miming to a backing track saying “put your hands up glasto” every 30 seconds.

It looked terrible.

The “true headliners” were apparently scissor sisters who filled out the woodsies tent long before they arrived on stage. They were brilliant.

How is that measured though?

I'd be surprised if the demand to see Charlie XCX was any greater than the demand to see Kneecap never mind Neil Young.

You had Neil, Charli XCX, Leftfield, Doechii and Scissor Sisters all playing during that slot, as well as everything else on the umpteen other stages.

I reckon just about every "demographic" was catered for adequately. I don't see why people are arguing about it.

At this moment in time any performer that's frivolous and doesn't bring the reality of the crisis we find ourselves in globally to the attention of as many people as possible via an event like Glastonbury are doing a great disservice to those being terrorised and facing daily threats to their lives around the world.

'kin Charlie XCX and the rest of the pampered poodles need to have a good look at themselves and ask WTF they do apart from line their own pockets and inflate their own egos.

I'd rather have 50 bands like Kneepcap at Glastonbury who cant sing or play a musical instrument over a hundred 'great entertainers' who cant see further than the mirror they have their stupid 'kin faces gazing admiringly into every minute of the day.

Oh Dave, must you live so relentlessly in the real world?
