2024/25 Idrissa Gueye

For those 2 CM places we need 4 players;

Iroegbunam: Needs a loan or sell

Garner: Should be a rotation option

Gana: He's got too many games ahead of him for his national team for 2 years. He could fall of a cliff any moment. I'd offer 1 year and also rotate him so his performances remain high level.

Armstrong: We'll see if he will be loaned or stay.

For me, we need to sign one starting midfielder, who would be our superstar. Also, another Armstrong 'type' with high potential to develop.

Gana cant be relied upon.
It really doesn’t work like that…You don’t just wake up one morning and not have it. Declines aren’t sudden. They’re gradual. Different rates, sure. But it’s not like you just have legs one day and then you don’t the next.

Could you perhaps give some insight into the Gary Neville & Sylvain Distin situations?

I’m getting old Z. Might need some more recent examples but I do recall Distin picking up an injury that seemed to tough to come back from before he left us. And even before that, his best years were under Moyes. That’s when he started to go downhill. He didn’t wake up one day and suddenly not be a footballer.

I’d look more at someone like Jags. His last season was far from his best and you could see the decline along the way. That’s what decline looks like. Gana has shown he’s still very much a top player.

Declines over 35 years of age are typically more accelerated than gradual. Loss of muscle mass, slow reaction times, slow recovery times, greater risk of injury. Sure, there are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

I don’t disagree with much of that. Though I do think sport science is much better now and Gana clearly takes care of himself. He’s not shown the signs of a normal 35 year old. Really I just don’t see any reason why he can’t be a first teamer in the coming season and a role player the following year. 2 years seems so logical to me with someone like him.

You could easily find that after AFCON his legs have gone...or next summer etc

Theres a lot of risk and for that reason a 1 year deal is all i would offer. Possibly with a 1year trigger if he plays 25 league games.

We need a top midfield signing asap so there is no reliance on him + another young player to rotate and replace him.

100% a starter this season, he won't go from being our player of the year to a bit part player I've a summer break. Key player this year and maybe a drop off will be noticed, I'd argue that even in year 2 he'll play more than Coleman will this coming season and we've signed him up.

You all realize he was our player of the season right? If he’s not quite at the same level he’s probably what, our third best player this go around? Then next season he starts taking a back seat but is still a key contributor? 2 years is a no brainer for me. He’s easily still that good.
Yes, he has been very good and it's not that he does anything wrong.

But as good as he is at certain things, his quality on the ball is nowhere near good enough for this league. A few years ago midfield was all about energy, pressing and moving your feet. Brilliant for Gueye. But no it's much more about keeping possession and being able to control matches. I'm not a fan of possession heavy football just for the sake of it, but it is alarming that Everton are nok able to control matches at all. To see us need to sit back and let opponents control where the match is played even in matches we are favorites to win.

It's not like Gueye was bad at PSG. He did pretty good and could justify a place in starting eleven. But the club saw that for the club to be what they wanted to be and to play the kind of football they wanted to play, they needed to move Gueye on.

Signing Gueye will define what Everton will look like and how they will play. He is to good to be kept out of the team, and with him we will continue to see a very defensive team that are defending deep and that has an average of 40% possession. Two more years of playing every march as we are the underdog.

No direct comparison, but we have seen something similar with Soucek at West Ham. The club have spent a lot of money and brought in exciting midfielders from abroad. Players that need time, but end up on the bench because Soucek keep delivering 6s and 7s every week. Many have suggested that West Ham need to sell Soucek to take the next step.

Potentially his last ever day as an Everton player today....

Should have given him whatever he wanted. Fella has been a pleasure from the first game.

I know hes probably re-signing, but nevertheless, sad to think if him being gone.

…whilst we’d all love him to sign, I actually think it’s important to have some strict criteria regarding transfer and contract extension strategy. Obviously not one size fits all, so it doesn’t have to rigid but not ‘give him what he wants’.

More tongue in cheek than anything, Eggs.

The majority of calls, 2 + 1 for Alcaraz etc im behind. But seems widely accepted that he wants 2 and we want 1... so the give him what he wants was more, give him the 2 years.

….hopefully there’s enough common sense for both parties to reach agreement, Barney.

Gueye and Branthwaite on new deals will be a very positive announcement.
