Stroke Awareness

Hi folks. I was contacted by @AndyC yesterday, and he’s asked if we can signpost some people to a podcast he and Paul have discussed on stroke awareness.

This is clearly an important topic and it’s always worth being aware of how to lower your risk of any cardiovascular disease.

Here is what Andy has said about it;

“Sometimes, and more often than not complete unexpectedly, life throws folks a curveball.

Back in 2023 Paul, #theEsk, was on the wrong end of two such curveballs - completely unexpectedly, he suffered two strokes.

Now, having been fortunate enough to have made an almost complete recovery, as well as continuing to #podcast about #Everton, he’s throwing his energy into raising awareness of and efforts to try to prevent further growth in the numbers of strokes being suffered.

From the same stable as the successful #TalkingtheBlues #podcast, Paul is launching a new one entitled #TalkingaboutStrokes.

The new podcast will lead to a soon-to-be-launched website dedicated to the fight against strokes for sufferers, friends and daily to refer to as a resource for assistance, help and information.

As always, Paul is grateful to everyone who listens and he gratefully invites comments and feedback.

Thanks in advance for listening and supporting this important cause.”

Strokes don’t discriminate, and ironically talking a Geordie mate of mine who lives and works in Saudi… he told me today of having recently suffered a number of dizzy, nauseous spells that culminated in him suffering from double vision.

Luckily, his Saudi employers provide him with top notch medical care and after MRI and CT scans, umpteen blood tests and ECG tests, the results of all those and a Cerebal Angiogram led to the conclusion that he’s had a minor stroke.

He admitted he’d been the typical man in that ‘ah, there’s nowt wrong with me that a good nights kip won’t cure,’ but after almost a month off work and having been in and out of hospital, it’s only now he feels he might be getting over it.

As he put to me today, “if yer feeling rough Bonnie Lad, get herself checked out !!”

His experience and those of Paul the Esk are something to a wake-up call to us all !!!

I was only 49 when I suffered a minor stroke, my wife had been telling me that my speech had become slurred. Iam just tired love I said , because I do heavy work, construction, that is what I blamed it on. Until a few days later I suffered complete blackout, it was like roller doors coming down in my vision until complete darkness. After all long wait in accident and emergency I was admitted to a stroke ward. Iam sorry Paul said the consultant after reviewing your scans you have had a stroke, can't be possible said I , Iam only 49. Thank god now at 57 I have suffered no more strokes and made a full recovery albeit with a weakness in my arm. I gladly take my blood thinners now, I was scared I can tell you.

I live in Spain, but get back to Ireland two or three times a year. Before Covid I remember a couple of times when I went back and was talking to my uncle that he was talking a bit slurred and a bit doddery, and I thought to myself he is a bit young to be getting like that. I didn’t comment on it to my mother or his wife though, to be honest I didn’t know enough to think it was important for me to mention. I mentioned it to my sister but I don’t think they really noticed the change like I did as they saw him all the time.

A bit later during Covid he collapsed with a major stroke in the garden, and the doctors said he had had minor strokes before that went untreated. He is in a home since then, and well is not himself anymore. Not really there.

I regret not having said anything or checking up on my concerns, or not knowing enough to suspect what the signs were saying. I think of it a lot. If the people around him including myself were aware enough to make sure he checked these things out earlier, he might have been able to enjoy this last period of his life properly

Glad you have recovered and are doing well. And like the prostate cancer one, this is a commendable idea

He hasn't had a stroke (that was 20 years ago, a minor one), but our dad had a heart attack on Thursday and is in quite serious condition in hospital where they've discovered numerous other conditions.

The worst thing is we've had a horrid relationship these past two-three years because he took the side of our arsehole brother who robbed from a load of people and will end up in prison next year, plus we haven't spoken at all for about eight months as a result, and I live 8000 miles away.

Still, hope he pulls through and we can start to make amends for the horrible recent times we've had.

Thanks @Groucho for posting this and @AndyC for your original message. I never anticipated posting again here lol, but some things are way too important.
Best wishes to everyone, and please look after your health - blood pressure particularly is a major cause of strokes

An introduction to the value of lived experience and peer to peer support - a personal view by Paul @theesk

Most pharmacies will check your blood pressure for free. I was referred to my GP after my check and am now on medication which has brought my blood pressure down and should reduce the chance of suffering a stroke...

A friend about my age, mid 50s had a stroke out of nowhere sone time back. Its taken him 5 years or so to make it back to being himself. There but for the grace of whatever universal power you may believe in...

Carpe deum.
