Travel thread 3.0

Just seen yesterday theres a sleeper train starting soon from Warsaw, Poland to Croatia with many stops on the way including Ljubljana.
I need to look into to this. Been trying to get to Ljubljana for a while as an old school friend has moved there, she has a few air bnb's and now just opened up a bar call MI6- Brit Bar, no flights from up north etc.

Hungary is worth a look. Currently in Budapest and it's lovely. Previously I've stopped over in Debrecen (a smaller country on the East side) and that too is nice. Friendly people.

View of the waterfront from the castle.

Its 30c at the moment.

Had five days in Budapest booked for my 30th but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Really need to get there. Looks stunning

Off to Belfast with Mrs Purchase, 3 nights and booked for the Titanic museum, which has had good reviews.

Has anyone done the Falls& Shankill black taxi tours?

I am tempted, but a bit uneasy about 'troubles' voyeurism.

What do Irish Toffee's feel about this.

I did the black taxi tour a few years ago. It was fantastic. It was informative but the taxi driver relaxed us with a fair bit of banter along the way.
It's a very friendly City .

Not at all mate. It's huge tourist draw and and interesting to hear the history from different perspectives. I have done the tour myself.

Depending how confident you are the loca bars in those types of areas are the places to go for cheap beer but not too many venture out and stick to the city centre. My local is about £4.20 a pint (Cheaper on Mondays and Tuesdays) but expect to pay £5.50 - £6+ in most city centre bars.

The centres very pricey these days. I try and steer away from the cathedral quarter but that is the busy touristy destination. Only bars i like down there are Duke of York and The Spaniard (The 2nd floor in it).

Away from there i like The Garrick, Sunflower, Kelly Cellars and Maddens. Still pricey but better atmospheres than most others.

Enjoy your time here.

Can also vouch for Maddens pub. Spent a night there drinking and listening to Irish music. One of the best pub experiences I've ever had, and also one of the worst hangovers.
Been there a couple of times and one of the lads I go with grew up around there, he rates the taxi tour. Also the prison tour was really good. Robinson's bar is great too. Nice bar, music room with plenty trad muscicians in the back, and a pool hall upstairs. Apparently Alex Higgins used to frequent there (or at least one of my mates bros used to drag him in when he was drunk on the street outside!.

3rd annual trip to Majorca recently. Spent a bit more time in Cala D'Or (inc watching the Southampton game with a few scousers!), and found this cool roof top bar. Large wine and a cider for "only" 15 Euro as well!WhatsApp Image 2025-06-16 at 13.09.57.webp
Wasn't such a fan of the 7hr delay on our flight home tho. Got to Gatwick at 3am, and not back home til 7:30! £440 compo (for 2 of us) helped soften the blow tho :D

Hows the vibe with the locals? Seems to be protests happening there against tourists?

My missus went there about 18mths back on a work trip. Think she flew to Paris and changed flight there. All fine when work pays. Apparently an utterly beautiful city.
