iirc, Ted Heath was Prime Minister at the time.
As Harold Wilson remarked later on...gist..."we never lost the world cup under a Labour Govt."
It was still Harold Wilson at the time of that match @degsy . Heath was elected 18th June (55 years ago this Wednesday)
I think the Wilson quote was along the lines of "we have only ever won the world cup under a Labour Government"
