I have no real opinion on him at present because I don’t have enough to base an opinion on in terms of his ability to play for us in the Premier League.

Well he has to play more first like. He's shown decent progress in limited game time (due to injuries too, I know).
Hopefully he's fit and proves himself to be a decent player, as we'll need a bag full of (at least) decent players in the coming season.
Everyone thought he was just a "psr fiddle" when we brought him in. He surprised many of us with his early performances and now everyone is saying he has to do better?

He's done just about okay at best a few times and is 22 mate, unless he shows something, anything, he'll remain a PSR fiddle.
We did get the better end of the deal but we'll also need him to be at least a consistently okay player instead of a tax write off - we have no midfielders and if he doesn't stake a claim now he'll be unlikely to be Prem footballer for long.

See, prior to injury, he was our best player in a number of consecutives games and everyone was getting excited about his potential... I'm not sure how he has now gone back to 'did ok a few times'?

I thought he did well before his injury too. Maybe when he came back as the season was closing and he was only getting minutes here and there, he was trying too hard to make a big impact rather than doing the simple things right.
Both things can be true though. He did OK early on - there were some fairly clear flaws in his game but he showed some good stuff too - but then there were another 7/8 months of the season after that where he didn't contribute much. He's 22 now and has been around first team football for 3 or 4 years, you'd have to think it's likely to be a big season for him in terms of showing whether he can do it at this level or not.
He was a good player in a few games in a team that had clear instructions to not make any pass that's not a hoof - him making the shortest pass forward made him stand out.
He's shown there's a player in there but it's up to him (and our coaching staff) to get the best out of his situation - at 22 and with several years in/around first teams and still playing less than 10 games a season or something, his time's running out sadly. Or at least that was the consensus for other players, so it's clear it should be the same here
