Today’s Football - 2024/25 Season

My Chelsea supporting mate was unsure about celebrating winning given the quality of opposition throughout. He said he had heard of hardly any of the teams involved in the competition.

I told him I would kill(metaphorically) for Everton to win it.

I know a few Chelsea fans who said similar and I'm deffo with you on this one. Top teams just don't get it tbh, they reckon their next trophy is round the corner.

When we were relegated to League One we played in the Papa Johns Trophy. We lost one final against Portsmouth and four years later beat Tranmere (behind closed doors because of Covid) to win at Wembley for the first time in my lifetime. I celebrated that trophy as if it were the FA Cup to be honest. Football is about moments, and (in my mind) seeing us win something is class regardless of the tournament. If you're in the tournament then you might as well win it!

The Conference League has a clear purpose. It is to give teams with little chance of winning the bigger European competitions an avenue to do so. Given the Champions League and the Europa have become the preserve of the mega clubs, the Conference is an important competition.

The fact Chelsea won it this year doesn’t change this. The winners roll is quite refreshing so far in general. However, getting rid of the Europa drop downs clearly hurt the quality of the competition this year and needs to be looked at.

Wait. So this world club cup is a new thing? is it replacing the one where the winner of each confederation plays each other? Is it just a sad money thing? I see Chelsea in it for their 2021 trophy.

Aye, 100m for the winner is making them all preform like dancing monkeys. Should mean that unfortunately it will become a big deal fairly quickly. The rich get richer.
