Transfer Rumour Liam Delap

Said wasn’t arsed about this from the beginning.

Rather we went for a striker from abroad who wants to make a name for himself.

I’d rather us go for a complete unknown and try and find a baller. We need another Lukaku, or Kanchelskis type signing, an absolute difference maker upfront. I don’t think you get those types of known quantities these days as top clubs won’t let a single player through the net anymore but there’ll be an up and coming unknown somewhere in the world and we need to find them.

Lukaku cost us £30mill didn't he? So talking £50mill today prices which is the price Cunha went to Wolves for.

To me you can't scrimp on a forward and hope it pans out. Just target one you think you can get and pay the money.

It's the wide players you can take a punt on IMO.

But on Delap... he'll never be "the one that got away"

Most players in this situation with options will go for the glamour move. They won't be concerned about getting game time, it's all ego and $$$ and not cold football logic.

We're not going to win in the majority of these cases. No harm in making an approach but you have to move on quickly. It is good here that it seems a decision will be made in the next week.

It's a global market and we'll do well to focus on finding players that can be in demand a year or two from now having played for us, and we'll get them in cheaper.
Not necessarily the case.

Footballers will always back themselves, and it is a short career, whatever people think of the lad, he came through the best acadamy in the country and is currently playing for his country at under 21 level.

He will back himself to succeed at Chelsea, whether he will is another story

superb

Chelsea finished 4th , have won a trophy and they are playing alot of young players, it makes total sense for him to go there..
They could also buy 5 strikers at the drop of a hat. Delap could very quickly find his only chance of playing football is through a loan deal (ala Broja). I get the appeal of the higher wage and chance of playing Champions League, but in reality Chelsea have about 50 players that have been sold that dream, and most have barely kicked a ball for them in their first team yet.

Exactly. He’s not even starting ahead of Jackson.

It's a risk for him but I can see why he would take it

Me too. I don't think it is the right move though. Gone are the days of players seemingly making clever stepping stone moves to the top - they are willing to take the risk to achieve it in one jump, and so few of them make it.

Chelsea have a host of other young players already coming in this summer - Quenda and Essugo from Sporting, Estevao and Paez from from South America - and it sounds like they are lining them up for next summer already as well (e.g. Emegha). These are additions to an already bloated squad and trying to bring through some of their own (e.g. George). It's true Football Manager stuff, literally trying to secure all the wonderkids - but how on earth are the majority of them going to get the necessary game time to develop, other than being loaned straight back out for a few seasons, to see who makes the cut (like they have done with players like Veiga this season).

Delap may be the exception but it is a big call for him to try and displace Jackson, plus any other established striker they sign. They also have Guiu, who scored a hat-trick aged 18 for them and Maresca waxes lyrical about but has barely played since he returned from injury.

Whatever he does is a risk to some degree. We're hardly a club with a reputation for making strikers lives easy or for being the best around at developing players. He could very easily come here and it not work, just as much as the same could happen elsewhere. He'll make the decision that's best for him, if that's coming here then great, if it's not then I hope we can move very quickly on to our next target and hopefully have better luck there.
