Manchester United

It always galls me that these players never once consider taking a pay cut in order to play. It's like they can't possibly live on just £200k a week rather than £300k a week.
I see both sides of the argument, tbf. These clubs, organizations and media companies profit quite heavily from the product - which are the players themselves

I haven’t followed Rashford’s story closely enough to weigh in on all the factors but a contract is a contract. I also agree if you are brought up through the club and it needs you to accept some furlough or wage deferral to help with PSR/FFP then I understand this as well. Doesn’t mean they have to agree to it (Frenkie deferred money but several including Leo & Pique took less money when the club was decimated by contracts drawn up by previous management)

But equally, I would expect the club with so much riding on both the sporting and financial aspect of things wouldn’t get caught with their pants down like Barça were under Bartomeu - even when a player is unsettled, injured or simply not productive. Here corporate malfeasance should be dealt with seriously but punishing the rich is a race with no finish line

You wouldn’t give part of your salary back at your job if somehow it helped the company’s bottom line, just out of loyalty

Fair market value for your contributions make sense to me but equally I believe if you are invested in the club’s success you’d make an effort to modify the contract terms to ensure sporting & financial success at the club you purport to support & wish to thrive in….else, you’re just cashing in

I get what you're saying, however, it's not the way they look at it. That 100k a week shortfall is 5 million per year. Who is just giving up that sort of dollar? If the club paying their wages wants them off the bill, they might have to accept that players want their contracts honoured. If he wants to take a wage cut, he will do so, he will be expecting United to pay him off to cover that. He'll argue he didn't ask to be frozen out.
It depends what matters to the player I suppose. By all accounts, Rashford is incredibly unhappy at United, yet it's hard to imagine how any club would be willing to match his current salary given what he's produced on the pitch in recent years. He'd have no shortage of suitors if he lowered his salary demands, but I doubt he will.

He's not at the end of his career ala Winston Bogarde, where he'll happily stick two fingers up at the club mad enough to pay him so much. These should be his peak years.

It's not really about him having his United contract honoured though. He's frozen out of the team so it's in both parties interests for him to go elsewhere. The problem is, his output on the pitch is nowhere near the level one would expect for the wages he's on. United were foolish enough to pay that, but no other club in world football would be. So, he either lowers his demands, or what? Sits in the reserves at United? This is a guy who created the impression of having a social conscience, so it's a bit sad that he seems to favour money above all else.

Maybe he feels he's been stitched up, and wont go belly up just to satisfy the individuals that've done the stitching up. You want me done and dusted? pay the contract off and we can go our separate ways easy. Richest club in the world pleading poverty? get in the bin!

The lack of return may not be just down to the player either, he looked dangerous at Villa

100% seems like the kinda guy who ain't budging on wages. Same with Sancho and Anthony.

One of those 3 will be in the squad for next season due to not being able to shift.

Can see Sancho doing his up most to stay at Chelsea and them completely ignoring him to buy someone better

It's a shame as there was a time when Rashford and Sancho looked like they'd be mainstays of England's attack for years to come.

Sancho was always a PR spin for me. FIFA heads going gaga cos he was teeing up Halaand. Big money move, flatters to deceive in the prem where he's not first choice for United or Chelsea.

But at that time you'd have been seen mental if you said someone like Anthony Gordon was better than him. But he is
