Transfer Rumour Liam Delap

….of course we need a couple of decent strikers, there’s no doubt about that but the hope in signing Delap is that he’ll be no1 in the pecking order.
I just get the feeling Moyes doesn’t trust Beto. He is very inconsistent, he was excellent at Newcastle but look at him against Chelsea and Brentford? If we have aspirations of Europe however, we need better quality all over the pitch. We desperately need a RB, quality in wide areas and a serous injection of pace in the side.

United aren't exactly a fountain of football scouting knowledge
Chelsea buy players that they think they can move for value and Delap fits the young, english price tag, £30m is a good investment for them
Newcastle want a backup to Isak
True but they’ve just bought Cunha who would walk into our side. Irrespective of their reasons for wanting him, the lad must have something for 4 clubs to want him.

Its fairly relevant though isn't it.

The game changes and evolves due to needs such as stats, scouting, sports science, social media, multi club ownership, 5 substitutes etc etc

I don't like any of that and much prefer the halcyon days of 3 subs and a squad of 14, but when your evaluating things you need to look at what's relevant to the modern game, its football for nerds

If you didn't look at it like that, you could comment something for example that Scotland produce tonnes of world class players because of Kenny Dalglish, Dennis Law, Graeme Souness, Billy McNeil, Paul McStay, Danny McGrain, Alan Hansen & Alec Cleland
There are some universal truths in football. One being it’s unwise to write off a young player based on a limited data set. It was true in 1950 and it’s still true today.

But I didn’t mention Scottish footballers you loon. I used an iconic example for a universal truth that it’s not wise to judge a young striker solely on their goal output early on in their career because there are multiple examples throughout history of players having low ratio for their first 100 games and great ratios for the next 200. I could also have used Kane or Salah as an example. But you probably say they didn’t play for Ipswich.

Surely the realistic stance is to say the jury is out? He was fairly poor in the loan spells he had in the Championship, but has scored a few goals for Ipswich. DCL managed to have two good seasons in his career but the norm has been way below that. We just don't know what Delap's "norm" is.
To be fair the loans he was 19/20 and Kane had poor loans, we don’t know what the norm is because he’s had one season,
Dcl has had 7 or 8 seasons and got double figures twice.

Take Ivan Toney played his first season in the prem at 25. In 3 yrs taking away penalties he was a 1 in 3.3 games and was still getting talked about as a 60mil striker. Solanke 3 full seasons at Bournemouth in the premier league, got double figures once and only has 9 in 27 for spurs this year and cost 60mil at 27. His replacement cost 45mil and got 10 in 31 and hes 25.

Some on here think you can buy a 1 in 2/3 prem striker for peanuts

This would be more than a signing, it would be a statement of intent. The clubs chasing him have serious resources and should we be able to acquire a sought after player ahead of them, it makes us more attractive to other prospective signings.

Hope we do it, but I’m not holding my breath.

Weird teams aren't signing these players, have you thought of handing over your dossier to the club?

…blokes on a footy forum aren’t being paid big bucks to identify real quality that’s vfm, it’s what blokes within the club should be doing. Nobody is saying it’s easy, but it’s a big old world and talent is out there away from the obvious.

And strikers are the hardest players to get..it's just silly saying there are definitely quality strikers available for 15 mill

This is the type of argument that thinks betting on a horse is a good investment strategy since some people win bets.

….of course they are because the skill set has to be superior, but I’m sure plenty of these big bucks players were once purchased for a fraction of their current value.

Villa bought Djohn Duran for <£15m and sold him for £64m a short while after, Mbuemo cost Brentford £5m and is linked with United for £50m. It’s lazy to think you have to spend big bucks on quality.

You are right Munoz at palace cost 7m and Kerkez 15m for Bournemouth. Imagine the difference those two would have made to our full back positions. Two starting full backs for a little over 10m each.
