Transfer Rumour Liam Delap

Power of really big money - for the kids they're getting offered mega contracts, more than the non-european teams can give them. For the club they know if the player doesn't work out they know they can almost recoup their money by selling to clubs like us and go out and buy someone for £60m instead

Yeah I just don’t like the poaching of young academy players I guess. Delap was at Derby County for 10 years and then City took him. Doesn’t sit right really.

Ah absolutely mate - still get a few that come through for their clubs but nowhere near the 200 games odd you mentioned about Wright etc. Recent examples are the Bellingham brothers both coming through at Birmingham and Gray at Leeds, now it's more that the moment they get exposure the big ones swoop in (similar to what we did for Stones, Holgate and Branthwaite though!)

….i’m sure there are examples of us doing similar as well as it happening to us. Most Academy players will be released by clubs, it’s a tough game to succeed in and young footballers need to do what’s best for them.

when did you start watching football?

£30 mil now is circa £10m around the time we signed AJ and Yak

Good deal imo
£20m last season looks like it was.

And incidentally been watching football long enough to know the Yak was 25 had scored 60 top flight goals in 154 games when we bought him and AJ scored 22 goals in this debut Prem season compared to Delaps 12.

Also been watching long enough to remember Mido, Roque Santa Cruz and Benjani……

Yeah he might be the next Lukaku but he also might be this seasons Evan Ferguson, but hey it’s only £30m plus prob another £20m in wages.

doesn’t look quite such a bargain compared to Alcaraz rumoured fee either.

There’s kids in Everton’s academy system now that they’ve picked up from the likes of Wigan, Preston, Crewe etc and they’ve paid a substantial development fee for them.

Do I agree with it? Not really, but I guess the club needs to generate money, so maybe a £10~£20K development fee paid for a 12 year old and they hope they become a £7~£10M sale like Tom Cannon and Ellis Simms if they don’t make the grade for the senior team.

In a lot of the cases, it’s being pushed by parents. I saw a documentary a few years ago where a parent had pulled their kid from one academy to another several times and the kid ended up at 16 without a club and no-one would touch him because of the development fee owed to his last club if he signed for another pro-club.

neither were that good or had such an all round game at 22

I suspect that’s simply the reporters slant on it, I highly doubt anyone at the club rang his agent and said ‘we would like to present the project to Liam
Equally I doubt anyone meetings involved a PowerPoint slide show either.
Wel, it would be the first time we were ever a project for any of our owners. We were a personal fiefdom for Kenwright. If we are a "project", that suggests planning and execution are priorities. My God, imagine what it would feel like to be run like an ambitious, well-resourced club... I'm a fan for 45 years and I don't know what that would feel like...

No problem getting Delap in. But we also need to start getting midfielders and wingers who can contribute also. Easier said than done, I know. When we get linked with a midfielder who averages about two a season my heart sinks. We have enough of them already.

True - your post fits both a 🤣 and a 🙁 unfortunately.

We’re up against it, but United are a basket case and Chelsea have about a million players on their books. He comes here, he leads us out as our #9 at a brand new premier league stadium and we build our team around him. That’s simply got to be a tempting offer.

Not getting excited though, Chelsea will probably just throw £200k p/w at him and he’ll take it.
