Goodison Alehouses: Crofts closed on Sunday. Any others going/gone?

After the game on Sunday I went the Black Horse then The Glebe, then back to walk round Goodison one final time. Decided to have a final one in Crofts on the way, but was sad to see them locking up for what he said was the final time ever… 😢😢. This was about 18:30 on Sunday. Was never a regular there but thanked him for all the beers over the years.

for me, losing pubs/clubs like this, whilst inevitable, is almost as sad as losing Goodison itself. so I want to keep tabs on how the various alehouses near Goodison are doing. I’m gonna start a list, but for now, please add any updates (confirmed rather than speculation) of which locals are still open, and which are closed, either temporarily or permanently.

apologies if there is already a thread for this.

A pub I always went into was the Anfield Hotel. Started about 25 years ago, and there was one or two years where they didnt open straight away due to struggling in the off season. They never opened at all this season, and Im gutted I never got to say goodbye to them. They were a fantastic group.

This season then we've been at Walton Social, a lovely compact place, again with wonderful staff. Everybody's first ale was free on Sunday, which was a lovely touch. Theyre trying to remain open and are running buses to BMD, which they tell me has over 100 booked on for matchday 1. I really hope it works out for them, or else they too will likely have to close.

I’ve been going the top house near Walton lane then onto the glebe to meet my mates.

I think pubs up that end will do ok, it’s the ones nearer ground that might struggle.

Heard from a few that they’re putting coaches on for next season so that’s good.

Will miss county road and the amount of good pubs down that end.

The Springfield didn't open for the season likely converting fully into a hotel/Airbnb like the upper floor currently is. The Stusrt has always been closed for a while, could work if the upper floors converted to hotel rooms.

There are alot of pubs in the area, arguably more so than any place in Liverpool except for town I think.

It a tough game nowadays, the better run pubs will survive, but there'll will inevitably be some closures. Tbh some of them have coasted along solely on the match day takings for years, with little thought in modernising.

Fair point that, it does seem like some of them have just thought they'll get enough business on matchdays anyway and so there's no need to make any effort to actually make it a nice experience.

As I didn't have a ticket on Sunday, I visited as many of the old pubs as I could (aware that I may never get the chance again).

Went in the Salutation, Albany, Top House and Spellow.

Impossible to explain why i like thd Salutation so much. It's like a 1970s museum.
Agree with the last part. Remember going in years ago when I was a teenager and thinking I’d walked into my nan’s living room.

Not an alehouse but the Blue Dragon chippy confirmed they're closing too, as well as the 'hole in the wall' on the corner of Gwladys Street
Gutted about that so sad, the bloke in the wall did thr hottest food ever. Always lovely people to.

I gave up the ale two years ago but still go to the boozers for a soft drink and hope to god they all can stay open. They are a part of Everton as much as Goodison.

Yeah we got chatting to them a few months back, 30 years they'd been going - in some form or another. Shame.

The Crofts was one of my pre match drinks...Absolute hole with crap ale but I liked it in there.

Was in there before the City game and they literally had about 2 lights on,all felt very ominous.

The Barlows is another Pre match bevy for me,I do wonder if that might stand a fighting chance,5 mins in a cab to BM.

I'd like to think some blues will frequent match day.

Yeah i think you're probably right.

Seems like there is a hand full of places opening by the ground which will only increase once the ground is fully open.

That might ultimately put the sword to the likes of the Barlows.
