The Palace game was a crucial game. We'd won at Sunderland after the Arsenal game and then had Palace at home. We effectively handed the top 4 place to Arsenal that night. This is from Wikipedia

Everton beat Champions League rivals Arsenal 3–0 at home in a performance manager Martínez described as tactically perfect. Arsenal had won the night before we played Palace. They actually won all 5 of their remaining games after we beat them against mid & bottom half opposition. The odds are we still would have failed to catch them even if we had beat Palace. We were even worse at Southampton with 2 early ogs.
