"Everton That" moments

I remember playing Millwall in the cup whatever season it was Everton couldn’t defend set pieces. Millwall had a defender who had 11 goals from headers from you guessed it, set pieces.

Inexplicably bookies weren’t wise and I placed the only bet over £10 I’ve ever made and I was a richer man before the first half was through.

Everton that.

Think most clubs have moments like it, but some that spring to mind for me:

Going 3-0 down at home to Man United and looking dead and buried. Staging a great comeback and on the verge of a historic turnaround, only for van Nistelrooy to score with a few mins to go for a 4-3 defeat.

Destroying Arsenal 3-0 at Goodison in the battle for CL Football in 13-14 with one of our best performances in the PL era, looking like we were about to have years of progress and enjoyment...Put in a pathetic performance against Palace at home and lost 3-2 and then put in a worse performance against Southampton away, scoring 2 own goals, the first in the first minute. An underwhelming finish to the season.

Being 2nd on Boxing Day under Ancelotti, looking like qualifying for CL Football at one point, then letting a 17 year old - Jebbison, who'd been on loan at Chorley that season score his (to date) only ever PL goal on his debut for relegated Sheffield United helping us end the season in 10th.

Losing to Palace & Southampton ultimately made little difference as we finished 7 points behind Arsenal. We'd have had to also beat City and that would've made a certain other team Champions.

The Ancelotti collapse well yes of course was the last "night of excess" before the hangover of the following 4 years.

The Palace game was a crucial game. We'd won at Sunderland after the Arsenal game and then had Palace at home. We effectively handed the top 4 place to Arsenal that night. This is from Wikipedia

Everton beat Champions League rivals Arsenal 3–0 at home in a performance manager Martínez described as tactically perfect. The result left the side a point behind the fourth placed Gunners with a game in hand. A seventh successive league win for the first time since 1987 followed with a 1–0 victory over Sunderland which moved the club into fourth place. It also took them to 65 points, the highest total Everton have ever amassed in a Premier League season. The club then handed the initiative back to Arsenal in the race for Champions League football as they lost 3–2 at home to Crystal Palace.
