People tend to forget that the one good Martinez season, when you look at our xGA, was massively influenced by Howard having the season of his life.

Generally speaking, he was a decent keeper. Southall, Martyn, Pickford and Howard are the only keepers we've had in the PL era who were any good at all. The rest were terrible. The fact he makes that list says he was decent.

I think one key thing that undermined Howard's legacy was that the errors were always there, every season and he didn't erase them with maturity.

Pickford had a bit of a nightmare season under Ancelotti and was dropped and clearly did some work behind the scenes. He'd had a bit of a history of errors before that too.

He's pretty much stamped them out ever since. That's a big difference.

But overall I think Howard was solid. An imperfect part of an imperfect team that arguably punched well above its weight under Moyes.

In my generation Everton have been blessed with some great keepers, I would put Howard 3rd behind Pickford and “Big Nev”. I always thought Howard was an amazing character and liked his attitude. He made occasional mistakes, but when you play for as long as he did it’s inevitable.

Minor point: Pickford is very close to being as good as Big Nev, he is clearly one of the best in the league. It’s unfortunate that he is in such a poor generation, he deserves a trophy
You never watch Martyn ? He was head and shoulders above Howard

Started off electric.

Waned quickly; but still remained solid. Then was held on to, for too long ala Distin.

Felt he wasnt great with positioning, particularly from Set Pieces. But on his day was as good as everyone. The Belgium game at 2014 World Cup a prime example.

It’s a high bar because Southall was the best I’ve ever seen, and Martyn and Pickford were/are extremely good. Howard was better than a lot of the average keepers you see season in season out in the league and made his mark at international level. A good keeper, Pickford and Martyn are very good keepers, Southall is a great keeper.

I thought he was decent enough for most of his time here. He was definitely more clanger prone towards the end of his time. He certainly couldn't match up to Pickford or Martyn in modern times but that bar is very high indeed.

We've had genuine world class keepers and some awful duds and he doesn't fall into either camp but I think he can reflect on a pretty decent time overall over a long spell.

He seems a hard guy to dislike which isn't relevant to a discussion of his contribution here but I do like listening to him speak with such enthusiasm and good memories of the club.
Yeah all this really
