Anyone read Duncs book yet?

Imho Duncan straddles the line between cult hero and club legend. The goals and trophies don't hit the requirements. The length of stay, how he speaks about Everton, the fact he has had a couple of spells as caretaker manager and most importantly he gave us hope after we all suffered through the aging Cottee, Angel and Barlow period, does.

As the big man has indicated himself, the regret is if he had applied himself properly and been able to keep fit, he could have easily got 150 goals here and taken any arguments away.
Think Cottee netted more goals in less games.
Think in a better side he could have been viewed as a better signing, unfortunately he signals the big money signing as we declined.
I’d be interesested to see if he had come in after lineker in 1986. Would have bedded in with stars around him.
All guessing to be fair

He was only on the bench for the cup final because he was coming back from injury, definitely a first choice selection when available. Granted the biggest issue he had and why I wouldn't call him a legend is said lack of availability. Still love him though. I believe the term is cult hero.
The thing about the word “legend,” is that implies myth as much as reality.

I actually think his injury record - and disciplinary record - contributes to that status, rather than detracts from it.

Like lots of players, when they are injured and out of the team, you think when they come back they will transform our fortunes. I remember feeling that way about Dunc.

I think you have to remember the context as well. The 90s were a bit more unruly and the game had more characters. As you say, his antics all contributed to the mythology.

"legend", "icon", "hero", "star"
These are just meaningless words that get bandied about a lot.
One individuals "legend" may be no more than average to another individual (as witnessed in this thread) and that's OK.
The fan base is comprised of individuals none of whom are qualified to say who is or isn't a true Everton legend.

*apart from Hibbo of course, I'm sure we can all agree on that one.
