World Snooker Championship

Bit of chatter that there should be a rest day after the semi-finals of the world championship, I think that's a good idea, thoughts ?
Williams would have performed better and potentially won the match had he been granted a day's rest. Yet at the same time, the World Championship is similar to test cricket - the ultimate test of endurance and grit. Personally, though, I would support the notion of a day's rest.

It's the luck of the draw which is a bit unfair. Might be interesting to see previous finals and the advantage, if any, which accrued to the person who played their semi-final earlier.

An extra day for the second semi means an extra day also for the other player. So then there is the argument that its unfair because the first into the final has had a day to go cold...
Maybe they could restructure the semi's so they both wrap up on the same day at least?

In the last three finals, the players who won the first semi-final led the first session 7-1, 7-1, 6-2. Something to look at I think.

Here's the evidence of the last 10 years:

2016

Second semi-final: Selby v Fu
World champion: Selby

2017

Second semi-final: Higgins v Hawkins
World champion: Selby

2018

Second semi-final: Williams v Hawkins
World champion: Williams

2019

Second semi-final: Trump v Gary Wilson
World champion: Trump

2020

Second semi.final: O'Sullivan v Selby
World champion: O'Sullivan

2021

Second semi-final: Selby v Bingham
World champion: Selby

2022

Second semi-final: O'Sullivan v Higgins
World champion: O'Sullivan

2023:

Second semi-final: Selby v Allen
World champion: Brecel

2024

Second semi-final: Jones v Bingham
World champion: Kyren Wilson

2025

Second semi-final: Williams v Trump
World champion: Zhao Xintong

So, it appears that the winner of the second semi-final has won 6 of the subsequent 10 finals of the last decade. It's only the last three years that reversed this.

If this is indeed the case, then I don't see the argument for a rest day.

What has happened this year is a perfect storm: the first semi was won by a young man with a session to spare so that he had a full day off, while the second semi-final went almost the full distance and was won by an older man who probably ran out of steam the day after.

While being in the first semi IS an advantage for the final in that you have more time to prepare if you win, winning it with a session to spare is where the real benefit emerges. Hard to fault Zhao for obliterating O'Sullivan. With the best will in the world, I'm not sure Williams would have done that had he the chance. A tough break this year for Mark, I think.
