2024/25 Beto

If you look at things objectively, he has been a 1 in 2 striker which is basically what you ask for. He should actually be on quite a few more which is a result of him creating chances for himself which is a valuable asset. One thing we absolutely cannot do is try to replace him with a mid-level striker. I don't care if you think Beto is the anti-christ or whatever. He will be more effective than them. Go for a star if you go for one at all. If you can't find him, prioritize the other positions. Do not waste unnecessary money.

A very quiet game from him apart from the goal. Should have been taken off sooner imo but maybe Moyes thought Calvert-Lewin wasn't ready for a full half.

He’s almost a 1 in 1 striker if you count all of the counter attacks he starts for the opposition.

He was better in the air today, not just for the goal. Still can’t consistently control the ball with his feet, and when he doesn’t his first touch ends up 25 yards away.

Club should be deciding between him and DCL to go along with Chermiti as backup options next season. Keep one, lose one. Both pretty crap players, but they would be under contract and still sellable in a year's time. We won't have the money to bring in two new strikers alongside everything else we need.

Moyes pleased with Beto, with more games wonders if he could have hit 14-15 goals.
In retrospect, the lad has done well.
Carried the strikers burden on his own, for large parts of the season , with workhorses behind him and responded by becoming joint top scorer with 9.
Hold up play needs to improve, which you should be able to coach.
However, he does possess what you can't coach: a strikers instinct.
Deserves a squad place, next season

Good goal yesterday. Great run and header. He’s capable of scoring those but his all round game is not prem standard. You can get away with it in Italy as the game is slower.

His flurry of goals will have kept his value so I’d take the opportunity to sell back to an Italian side

If nobody wanted to offer DCL a pre contract agreement in January when he'd refused what we put on the table highly doubt anyone will want him when he's a year older and probably been injured yet again

Yes but you can coach his all round game. Improve his ball retention. He is never going to be Pele, but he can improve in those areas.
What you cant coach is a goalscorers instinct and that he has got.
The lad is a good finisher.
I would prefer a decent striker to complement him.
Strengthen other areas.

Maybe you could coach him if he was 16. He’s 27. You’re not coaching premier league level basics now.

You know, if he was playing back in the 90s with the 2 strikers combinations like Cole/Yorke, Shearer/Sutton etc, he'd be dynamic running off a Sheringham type player. Football's changed and for the worse imo by playing one striker who spends most of his time back to goal not facing it. Because Beto plays up front on his own, his poor touch and lack of awareness are put in the spotlight.
It was evolution, the extra body in midfield meant a strangle hold on control of the game. Someone took Gullit's sweeper and put him in front of the defence to suit the offside system. Let the defence push up, and push the wing backs on again to over load the flank, someone has to gamble on the opposite side because often the ball breaks here. We found a system with Cahill as AM for the extra body pressing in midfield and utilised his superhuman timing late run headers supporting the striker. The cost was that he burnt out quicker than ordinary. For converted midfielder think McClair supporting Hughes. Of your comparisons for out and out strikers it'd be Shearer and Ferdinand supplied by Ginola and Gillespie. What I don't see with Beto is that physicality or aerial ability, he seems more of a sprinter, deceptively quick, Yakubu was brawn with a killer instinct.
I suppose it's down to fashioning a style with the parts you have, Beardsley supporting Cottee for instance.
notts forest have been a bit of a throw back this season, Elanga off Wood reminiscent of Phillips off Quinn. Simply as the quicker smaller player off the big unit winning headers. I suppose the prime example of the solo forward was Drogba with Lampard as AM and the wingers haring in at speed. Drogba types are a rarity of course. Also having Makalele tidying up instills some confidence to get forward.

Who can Moyes find this summer that'll be the surprise player next year. We might need more than one.
