He was

A big joker led by example on the pitch as captain- one foggy night away at Blackbun - he left westy on the pitch for an age as the crowd had to tell Westy the game was abandoned- he & his teammates were in the dressing room laughing he was still out there :D
Very fun! I've been wondering if Labby played for the 1966 world Cup, would he been the captain?

No he was only on the fringe of the squad in 1966 - as the yard dog Jack Chalton was preferred - so he dropped out to get married - in 1970 he played in Mexico - he was a true footballing centre half only ever got booked twice in is long career - Bally used to chase back & ask him & Hursty his defensive partner to kick the opposition they just told him to ask Morrissey who always obliged ... a gentleman footballer with skill -
