Plus, Pejic or Van Den Hauwe would still batter any of today’s players, regardless.

Be interesting to see how the likes of Salah would cope with tackles from behind, and generally being kicked all game.

It's a daft argument comparing old players to new players. People like to say 'the game has changed so much' but has it really? The fundamental skill-set required to be a top player hasn't changed. If we suddenly reverted back to 1980's pitches, fitness regimes, balls and tactics, all the current best players would still be the best players. Likewise, players of yesteryear would still be the creme de la creme if they'd had today's conditions.

There's an argument for fitness levels being much higher today, but then due to conditions, rules and equipment, matches are generally less physically demanding these days and rotation was unheard of 30 years ago.

Yeah, don't buy it.

The athleticism comes from years of academy work and an understanding of sports science. Yesterday's players would still make it to the top in today's game.

Skills are what separate Mo Salah from Demarai Gray. Or are we just saying Salah is 5 x fitter? Total fallacy that people involved in football look for athleticism first and skills second.

Where not comparing salah to gray where comparing salah to previour eras isnt thst the whole arqument

But it highlights that skills are very much still valued higher than athleticism, which you claim isn't the case in today's game.

Today's players are fitter because they're pushed to be fitter. They're not all super athletes. Some of the best players of the last 20 years haven't been very athletic at all KDB, Rooney, Silva etc. Yes, they can all run and stuff, but let's not pretend it was their athleticism and/or dedication to sports science that made them.
