Sure, he shouldn't have been signed as a starter, but as cover for a position where both senior players are (at best) injury prone and first choice is a centre back, it would have made sense. Would also have allowed Aznou some time to adapt to the league before he gets thrown in to PL football.

In retrospect, once Tete decided to stay at Fulham, it wouldn't have been the worst idea to re-sign Young as cover for both full-backs again.

Neither was Coleman's debut game against Benfica, when he played left back, Tony Hibbert played in central defence and we lost 5-0. Sometimes needs must.
