Sick days

I've not thrown a sickie since my younger drinking days but I'm not one to battle on when genuinely ill. I do physical work, often in remote areas, and sick policies are usually drawn up by people in comfy offices sheltered from the elements with brews, facilities and all kinds of comforts to hand.

Those who manfully carry on and claim to be troopers are usually just scared of telling a boss something they don't want to hear and instead choose to hide their pitiful fear driven acquiescence to authority figures behind a painfully thin charade of masculinity.

I used to take 2 or 3 short spells off sick each year when I couldn't be bothered going in to work but since I've been working from home there's no point calling in sick even when I've been genuinely ill. I just put less effort in to work occasionally but still turn the laptop on every day and wiggle the mouse.

I used to wear it as a badge of honor that I hadn't called in sick for 20+ years.

I can't tell you how many times that I went to work when I absolutely shouldn't have been near anyone.

Finally realized that wasting paid sick days was stupid and frankly could put other people in danger. It's not like I was getting a bonus or even a slap on the back for immaculate attendance. Use your sick days. Bonus if you're not really sick so you can get a paid day off.

I've also seen if your face fits and you're in a clique ,career success follows.
Even if you do like a sickie.
I guess that's down to company culture. I've seen it once in my career and quit because of it. The best decision I ever made. There are loads of companies with strong cultures where effort and ability count over being part of a "clique". If someone is stuck because of a bad culture they should leave.

Snivelling up to seniors helps in this day and age.
I've seen some unbelievable stuff in our place for some to get on.
Unfortunately the fruits of that are beginning to rot.

In my place you get to 10 and they come knocking and hinting your next will be disciplinary. Which is fair enough as its in my union contract.

I personally always call in sick 7 or 8 times a year, but its not extra days i am taking, they get deducted from my yearly allowance. I do that much OT that i sometimes feel burned out, so that is how i justify the days i take.

I haven’t had too many off, the odd week here and there over the last 20 odd years.

Worked with some absolute belters though.

Had one girl who went off sick for about 6 months with a bad back. Was tagging herself at theme parks on Facebook commenting how mad the rides were.

Worked with a fella who had 12 months off with stress, kept coming back in just to get his note signed off again, telling everyone how he was applying and interviewing for other jobs while off. His stress suddenly disappeared when after a year he got promoted, he’s now back in work enjoying life again.

Worked with a lad who had 3 weeks off after pulling his groin whilst gardening in January.

I wish I’d have taken more off to be honest, you’re not a hero if you don’t.
