Sir Alex Ferguson is considered the greatest manager in Manchester United’s history. Some even go as far as to rate the Scot as the greatest in the world. Regardless, Ferguson’s era was the turning point in the club’s history.
Recently, Michael Knighton revealed that Man Utd was on the verge of dismissing Alex Ferguson during his early days at the club. Knighton said that the club had planned to sack the Scot but decided to reconsider after
Man Utd’s victory against Nottingham Forest.
“If we had not won at Forest then Alex would have been sacked. I am 100 percent certain of that,” he said as per
Mirror.
“Martin Edwards [United’s former chairman] and Sir Bobby Charlton have tried to rewrite history by claiming that wasn’t the case.
“But when we played QPR at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day, I was stood in the boardroom at half-time when Martin sidled up behind me and whispered, ‘we’ve got to be talking about the manager,’” Knighton recalled.
“I almost choked on the sandwich I was eating. He made it clear he felt Alex’s time was up. But then we won at Forest… the rest is history.”
