McLeish to Villa from Birmingham was pretty bad. Took their rivals down and was then appointed straight afterwards.
Agree. We turned on Martinez too quickly and are paying the price ever since imo. Not seen a manager since he left play the good passing attractive football that his team played at their peak. Needed backing and more support through the tough times.

Disagree with this - we failed to direct Martinez properly; had he been told with sufficient authority in the December or January of his second season that what he was trying to do was not working we'd have avoided a lot of the problems that followed. He should also never have been allowed to go back for Kone, Alcaraz and even Robles; they were comfort blankets.

In his first season he had the right idea, not only for us but also how football was going. He should have been told to go back to it, but instead we let him switch to a style of play that was going out of fashion even then and we were right to sack him.

The bloke couldn't set up a defence to save his life that's why he got sacked. Everything was phenomenal even when we got turned over 4-0. He's managed to get the number 1 team in the world with all the talent Belgium has at its disposal into one semi-final. He's never learnt any lessons and at the end it was good riddance.

Independently, without prejudice and in the cold light of day I think most right thinking fans would have had him sacked in that preseason game against Man Utd

That was the breaking point for me

The derby was the time, when he clearly set us up to get battered. He shouldn’t have been employed by the club a second past midnight that night.

People forget how many second chances Martinez got. It was painful for a long time

Hopefully Davek, Forever Blue and the deluded Newcastle idiot will have a look back at there posts and realise what a bunch of penises they have been.
Wouldn't bank on it. It was all the players fault, injuries, only 30 million to spend, the fans. If I've missed any of their potential excuses, I'm sure you'll find them on your excuses Benitez bingo card.

He was getting worse. His signings were awful. And some of those performances toward the end - we legitimately could have lost by double figures to Liverpool - were disgraceful.

Still better than Benitez though.
