The Ale House - Is it even a thing now?

Being Northern Irish I refuse to recognise the term “ale house”, however I was a passionate supporter of the pub. I would not be a “big drinker” but I was consistent. I would have been in the pub on Thursday night, as a player you called in at 9 o’clock to see the team sheets. You didn’t want to assume you were on the first team but you would have been extremely disappointed if you weren’t. After my playing days passed I moved into management and you met up with the other managers to select the teams. As you were no longer a player you could have a few beers. Saturday was the pub day, you were in there early doors to ensure everyone had turned up and to ensure everyone got away if you weren’t at home, no beers at this stage as you were showing solidarity with the players. After the game it was back to the pub and a few beers. If you were at home usually the other team would call in and the craic would be might. If you were away you called into their pub and again the craic would be mighty. There were a few sides that didn’t hold with the “falling down water” so no pub for them but let us not judge. After the game the pub it would be home for a shower and pick up the better half and out for the night.
I might have had the odd Sunday out if the son-in-law called in.
I recently moved back to my home town, I thought it would be great to be back in my old stomping grounds and in the pubs of my youth. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out like that, I tend to see more of my old mates in Asda than I do in the pub. COVID 19 has finished me and pubs. I have had more meals in licensed premises over the last two years than I have pints. I now find my image of going to the pub, the thought of a creamy pint of Guinness and the craic with a few mates I haven’t seen for a while is so much better than the reality.
Before Christmas a guy at work who had a few miles on the clock was lamenting our glory days, he was reminiscing about how parties and outings used to be so much better than they are now. I think I burst his bubble when I explained it wasn’t that things were better it was that we were better.

Lightweight……

I had a great night in the pub with my mates. I then watched games of dominoes played by some really experienced guys. It cost me a fortune buying them all drinks. The pub is about socialising, it’s good for your mental well-being, especially after this Covid lockdown. You need to treasure your local pubs because if they disappear your house price will reduce and you will end up miserable as sin……….l.

I have a local which I've frequented for many years and think it's sad that it's becoming a thing of the past. People can buy a crate of beer for less than 4 or 5 pints in a pub but give me the latter every time. I've forged lots of long and lasting friendships through going to the pub, can't do that with a crate of beer at home. I understand why people drink at home but it will never ever replace walking into a pub and ordering a pint.

As our loads of the draught beers, which takes nothing at all from their quality.

It’s a truly marvellous pub.

5 30pm it was. Sundays 12-2pm and 7pm till 10 30pm. Remember when an extra half hour was added on Fri an Sat night, shut at 11pm.
5.00pm by us, we'd finish work, clock out, pick up pay packet, shout out the car window to all the girls who were also getting paid at their gate...anybody goin' the Hillfoot? and be at the door as the guy was sliding the bolts at 5pm.
Bail out at 7, home for the 3 'S's...shave and shower being 2 of the 3 and into town.
Or;
10.30 finish in lpool /Speke, double up last orders in the Peg or Noahs depending, swig them, leg it to The Dove, which was just over the border by about 4yds and do their 11.00 last orders.

Pubs need to adapt too though, there are pubs who think just having 'real ale' (which always has a pump with the clip always facing the other way), one lager (because lager is tasteless fizz!)and Guinness is enough where it's not anymore.

there are some awful pubs out there
Dont come to Australia then, the place beer wise is one big Carlton desert, plenty of 'Choice' 8, 10, 'different' Golds, Drys Extras, all the trendy names the brewery seems to go for...sure, plenty of cold, wet, beer coloured liquid - but nothing nice to actually drink.
I'm sure they all come out of the same barrel too
