You must have never watched Alan ball then.
A little bit before my time, but players are miles fitter now. Player as used to get pushed up the night before games and all of them smoked.

Nearly all the players were British or Irish. It was a much smaller talent pool.

There is absolutely no comparison to then and now.

Rose tinted glasses won’t change the fact

Ball was the fittest player I've ever seen, if he was around today he would be held in the same regard as Messi, believe me, he was that good.

Ball never smoked, didn't drink much, his vice was gambling, no rose tinted glasses either, there was no cocaine around in them days, if you think modern player's all stay away from that stuff and all other temptation you would be wrong, they're not all as squeaky clean as you think.

Yet the match going experience was far more entertaining than the tripe served up now.

and the pitches they played on were heavier boggier grassless puddings and even in the 80's balls weren't as light and dynamic as they are now. If players from the 80s had modern pitches and balls, the gap wouldn't be all that big. Well, actually it would as most of the 80's dude would be sent off for being too rough for the modern ickle snowflakes

Makes me wonder how these so called modern player's would react if they came up against someone like Pele, I reckon they wouldn't know what hit them, Pele was a footballer, not like these modern day so called athletes.

I agree with that. Football was more entertaining because it was less predictable. A greater range of teams won trophies. Nottingham Forrest could win the European Cup. But in a way, that is my whole point, football has become far more elitist.

There will always be individuals, but as a general rule, players are far fitter now. Sports science has defeliped performance levels enormously. Players look after themselves far more, follow diets etc.
