New Everton Stadium - Hill Dickinson Stadium

I thought KD never got beyond a general concept with only one external CGI image the sum total of the design?
There were a host of renders, and even an architectural model.

I'm not sure what else was produced, but it was enough to get everyone excited.

Can you expand on this, what’s BMD not got that makes it basic over whatever KD was proposed to have?

Kings Dock had a closing roof making it multi functional, more comfortable and probably more atmospheric because of that full roof (as at the Millenium Stadium). It also had moveable pitch too.... to improve its flexibility to host more events all year round. It was a more complex structure in that it was double-decker all the way around with slight over lapping of tiers bringing people slightly closer to the action and offering a slightly broader range of viewing options. It had a proposed 70 boxes compared to BMD's 22 (I think). It's perhaps slightly subjective, but BMD is a more basic bowl. Two tier, but with no overlaps on 3 sides, with cranked straight corner sections and straight running stands, not the more expensive curved constructions as at KD. At BMD the onus appears to have been put on the external design to eleviate heritage concerns and get it through planning and ofcourse the major internal feature is the large home end... so it is a simpler structure. It is also limited in that there a massive initial cost to prep the site, perhaps meaning less cash to increase that complexity.... It might still be more effective design layout in some respects...... sometimes less is more.

The Kings Dock concept was pretty closely based on Schalke04 Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen. Bill visited it during construction in the run up to the KD project and was entranced. It has a retractable roof and pitch and was designed specifically to be both a football stadium and a multi-purpose venue. That was the core of the vision for KD, supported by the central location.

In contrast BMD is a specialist football stadium a couple of miles outside the city centre with hopes/plans for limited additional use (a few events per year) and non-match day use for internal facilities such as restaurants & meeting/conference spaces (using lounges).

It is probably fair to characterise BMD as a more limited vision in an inferior location...but still a million times better than the hideous TescoBox.

Which is understandable but it is worth remembering that the only way that stadium was getting built was by Greggs having control of the club, (which was fair enough if he was putting all the money in), but also he would have owned the stadium only leasing it back to Everton F.C.. This was not ideal.

Not sure that is 100 % true. Wasn't there a phrase "reverse mortgage" used re KD? Gregg was to put up the money and over time the club was to pay it back to him with interest? He was effectively the building society lending the money to EFC who were the house buyer, wasn't it? Ultimately it would have been owned by EFC.

I think you'd be in a long queue for that haha. Yes, for years (and even now) i still can't pass the Kings Dock without breathing a massive sigh of "if only"......

I attended the following AGM expecting an outright rebellion over the loss of KD.... and he just brushed it under the carpet blaming everyone but himself, dismissing the whole episode and questions, controlling the entire conversation. Negligence and deceit wrapped up in the boys pen myths. Criminal!!

IIRC the club were talking up the Kirkby stadium as being modelled on Cologne's stadium.

...and they were getting Barr to build it...with leftovers from their Tesco buildings no doubt.

What a shambles that was.

There were a lot on unanswered questions about KD tbf. Were there any transport provisions that were nailed on at the time? Because 11,000 coming out of the Echo causes absolute bedlam on the Strand (usually at ~10pm). Can only imagine what 55,000 leaving a football ground at 5 on a Saturday would have done.

Purpose built football stadium without compromise over a multi-purpose venue for me. No doubt it is a shame a more central dock location was not feasible but who knows how the surrounding area might develop over the next 25 years. Leaving will be tough but this is a good result for us on paper

I often have to drive past the Colchester Community Stadium (opened 2008) as it’s clearly visible sat alongside the A12. That was also a Barr designed and built stadium, and every time I drive past I think “thank feck we didn’t end up with something like that”. It must be the most basic, non-inspiring “modern” stadium around. Admittedly their build budget was lower than Kirkby would have been, but still, you just know we’d have ended up with something just like it.
