Everton Youth Teams Thread

If Small wanted to show his worth he goes out on loan this season, smashes it then depending on what happens with Nkounkou he could have been on the bench next season as Dignes back up playing in the cup comps.

But instead he wants to be an instant PL player at age 17 without having to actually earn it. Look at players like Braithwaite and Gordon who have gone out on loan to try force their way into the squad.
Yes let's use the two players who both went on loan and came back further away from the first team than when they left lol great case for why he shouldve stayed I must say

Probably quite easily won actually considering already, 4 games in to the season, we have already once not named a full allocation on the bench and still included 2 keepers on it.

Southampton have named Valery on the bench every game despite having KWP and Livramento named in each squad. Valery has had diminishing appearances season on season including getting shipped to Birmingham last year. Makes sense to me to name one rb and one lb rather than 2 rbs. Which would be picking on positional merit
Very often the under 18's and under 23's are playing at similar times as the first team or possibly a day before or maybe a day or two after. I think that generally it is more beneficial for the players to be playing than just sitting on a first team bench.
My belief is that generally there is a squad and the team and bench will be picked from that and generally youngsters will not be parachuted in unless they have a real chance of breaking into the squad.

The Carabao cup would seems to be an exception to that.

I'm kind of glad Small left if his mindset is like that. He went to Southampton for first team football but when he played at u23s for us it was quite often played LW as he wasn't trusted defensively. Sounds like he knows it all already and that will be a very difficult player to coach. Time will tell but I'm confident he won't make it.

Thats because neither are ultimately good enough at this stage but even if they dont get a long term role at EFC if they keep working hard they'll no doubt make a career at a Championship level side.

If Small is the next big thing as he thinks he is then why is he so afraid to go cut his teeth? A 17 year old who has played 1 professional game which was a cameo off the bench expecting to become a PL level defender demanding regular football at this level without nothing to show for it is scandalous.

Serious question here, why should he go and cut his teeth with a random championship club if a prem side is offering for him to cut his teeth at a higher level?

What benefit does he get out of spending a season on loan as a squad player instead of being a squad player at Southampton other than to please you? Both him and his new club clearly feel he doesn't need to go the championship right now. The same way Livramento and others didn't have to go on loan to prove anything

You're obsessed with loans despite the fact that your own 2 examples were failures

Well Livramento has played every game this season whereas Small hasn't featured once.

He'll be playing for Plymouth in 12 months time regretting leaving the mighty blues

No , we opted out last season.
0-0 after 20 mins, they’re doing ok so far.
Really odd decision (another one Brands?) to opt out. It's an ideal situation for the youngsters to get some experience of the more physical side of the game against lower league sides in a competition setting.

In answer to your question in the first paragraph: Money, I bet his agent got him a very good deal off Southampton, who will have to pay more than a £M in compensation just to sign him. Everton offered him a good deal but he rejected it and signed for Southampton instead. Good luck in the future lad, hope it works out for you although, having seen you a good few times, you might do better as a forward player than a full back.

Well it’s a year ago now , so from memory we were bringing through the current crop of youngsters, moving on some of the older ones and the feeling was that it was potentially too many games for the youngsters at the time. Remember this is an u 21 tournament, though you can play older ones. At the time it seemed odd , there were a few comments but generally it was accepted.

Did they not say it was down to fixture congestion or something like that? Because of the cramped COVID timetable.

Didn't seem to worry Chelsea,Man City etc who both have a better record of developing youth to at the very least, sell on or get loan payments for. Thought Brands remit was to organise top to bottom, yet it just appears disjointed.
