Honestly thought we had something special when he 1st broke through, physically he had it all. But his decision making and fragile confidence have been a major drawback in his game.
That said, I always think signing players with untapped potential and a point to prove for small fees is a sensible model to build around, and he fits all those categories. On top of that, he is a much better option than any Sigurdsson, Bernard, Iwobi and Gomes, and maybe playing under a tactical coach like Benitez would do him the world of good.
Would he be top of my list of priority signings if we had loads of money to spend? No.
Would he improve us, give us something we are missing (notably the ability to carry the ball in midfield) and fit in with our apparent conservative budget as we try to undo the wrongs of before? Yes.
If we are struggling to put a deal together for a £13m International Right Back, these may be the restrictions we are currently working under.
