Everton Summer transfers 2021

I agree with that totally too. It is a recurring debate with Villa fans too. We have had our challenges with a DoF and replaced our last one earlier this year. Our current guy was the DoF at FC Kopenhagen. A problem I suspect that Brands has is that some of your managers have been very high profile, Carlo the biggest. It must be very difficult when the board hear a recommendation from a man of Carlo's stature regarding a transfer for Brands to disagree with it. We are probably fortunate that we don't have a big name manager and the club has been crystal clear with its communication the Lange is responsible and accountable for transfers. Smith can recommend a transfer but he does not say whether we can buy them. Smith does have a veto and if the club want a player that Smith disagrees with then we don't buy them. I can't see Carlo or Rafael working under those conditions
Yep I like the veto rule. The manager cannot force a player on the club but neither should the club force a player on the manager when he is responsible for results.

Every single player we have brought in during Brands' time here is a Brands signing. He is the Director of Football and the book stops with him, no matter who originally suggested the player.

If a manager suggests a player that Brands' doesn't think fits the right age profile then he shouldn't be signing off on the deals. He seems to relent to the manager every time which suggests he either doesn't have full control or he doesn't have confidence in his own ability.

Either way, there has been no consistency in the four summer windows he's had, which certainly has not helped us.
Perhaps that's the way it should be, but that's simply not true. Ancelotti demanded James and Allan. Giving him the signings he wanted was probably part of the negotiations to get him in the first place.

So easy to say the buck stops with Brands, but there's far more to the story at Everton, rightly or wrongly.

Doucoure and Allan both good signings exactly what we needed. James depends what side of the fence you sit. The point is still valid though both DoF and the Manager should have veto; one just hopes they get on or nobody would be signed.

Carlo: we can sign James
Brands: no brainier. Commercially and in terms of player quality.
Carlo: we can sign Allan
Brands: we need a decent midfielder, he’s was great at Napoli.

I don’t see how these could have been forced on brands.

Brands : Marco recommended a player when he was here called Doucoure. I have heard of him as he plays in the premier league and thats the only league I watch
Carlo : Yeh he is exactly what we need.
Brand : Great thats my work pretty much done, cya next summer- I take January off every year, the golf courses are empty its brilliant

Also, Ancelotti admitted he hadn't heard of Ben Godfrey when we signed him.

We wanted/bid for Doucoure long before Ancelotti rocked up here.

Ancelotti opened the door for Rodriguez/Allan but neither come in without Brands' thumbs up.

Ancelotti/Benitez have of course both worked under instruction of a director of football at loads of clubs.

If you are right ( that Brands is calling the shots ) and I'm far from sure that he is then he has no cohesive strategy and we are in a even bigger mess than I thought.

….no, I’m suggesting he might not be calling the shots like he did previously. I wonder if his authority in respect of transfers targets has weakened, although he might still manage the purse strings.
