Champions League revamp

UEFA, the English Football Association and the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga, and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A have learned that a few English, Spanish and Italian clubs may be planning to announce their creation of a closed, so-called Super League.

If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we – UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations - will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.

We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.

As previously announced by FIFA and the six Federations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.

We thank those clubs in other countries, especially the French and German clubs, who have refused to sign up to this. We call on all lovers of football, supporters and politicians, to join us in fighting against such a project if it were to be announced. This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long. Enough is enough.

This won't happen. Its just a ploy from the bigger teams to get what they want from Uefa and the new Champions League format.

Its a bit coincidental this has all come about just after the new format for the Champions League has been announced.

My guess is that they have seen something they don't like and this is all a bluff.

Spurs, Arsenal being invited tells me something about a top 6 champions league format being one of the issues up for bargaining.

I don’t agree with that - the PL broke away from the rest of the football league in order so that they could negotiate their own tv deal and not have to share the proceeds with anyone not in the top division.

Admittedly not as brazen as these latest proposals but the underpinning greed is the same.
Agreed mate, but they still protected the football league clubs. Yes, the rich got richer and this is why they want the break away now, because the 'smaller' clubs are catching up and they dont like it. Leicester are a prime example of this, the last two seasons the have been knocking on the door to CL football, above the likes of Arsenal a nd Spurs.

It's hilarious seeing some of those supporters of those clubs make the argument over it being unfair they bring in the most money but don't get a fair split of it - the only reason they want more money is so they can unfairly alter the dynamics of the league to favour themselves (which they already do).

If they really cared about distribution of profits being shared based on revenue brought in then their argument should be simply that they believe their owners should be allowed to earn more profit. We all know the reality isn't that they want the owners to make more money, they just want to have an advantage and would be entirely against the idea that all clubs have the same spending cap across specific leagues, something that would actually make all leagues competitive again if it allowed even the bottom clubs the ability to afford it.

Yes, but United didn’t win it through financial doping. They were rich and spent big but it’s not comparable to Chelsea’s approach and the impact it had on competition.
Of course it’s not comparable, but was just illustrating that the lopsidedness started before Abramovich

But surely, gate, commercial revenue, interest will be fan based. Empty grounds won’t help to promote this.

TBF though that assumes these clubs would stay in the places they currently are - some of them would be much more profitable if they were based elsewhere (the RS and Spurs especially).

They could turn it into a global league that way and guarantee full houses and cities / countries willing to take on some of the burden such as stadium construction.

Need to drop the hammer on these clubs, one way or the other. If they want to break away, follow through on that statement and kick them from all domestic comps, and no players can play international matches.

If it’s a power play to threaten UEFA over the Champions league changes, hammer them with a huge points deduction and a transfer ban next season.
