He really isn’t suited to a 4231 he’s completely incapable of playing in a 2 man midfield as we have seen many times before. Prior to his injury last season that’s where he played and he was just as shockingly bad. The performance away at Villa was the worst I’ve seen from a central midfielder at Everton in a long time. Then Saints at home last season close second to that.

He gets thrown into a 433 now because that’s the only way we can squeeze him in, completely relinquish him of most responsibilities, Allan does all the sweeping up, Doucoure does all the running back and forth, all he literally has to do is stand around making simple passes and he isn’t even very good at that.

He’s not good enough. Lacks the speed, energy, drive, desire and versatility to be a PL level footballer.

Sell ASAP.

His best spell was his first 10 games when we played that system and we had Gueye alongside him and Sigurdsson in the 10. Since then we have played all kinds of formations and he has been poor in all of them but them first 10 games I thought we had a player on our hands. At the start of the season he was the most forward thinking of the 3 in a 4-3-3 and he did ok but he wasn't totally comfortable.

Watch the game again, maybe meditate first to lose the hate you’ll see some nice dinked balls up the line to Digne, some clever little balls to Richy and Doms feet, a very good chance created for Dom off a set piece and a decent-ish shot on target. Some nice switches of play too. Some dodgy moments too and has a tendency to get caught on his heels on second balls when obviously he should be up on his toes. As i said far from perfect but i wouldn’t jettison just yet
Exactly my thinking. He is a very clever player and some of his passing is exceptional.

3 seasons ago when he was new to the league and had a work horse like Gueye alongside him doing all of his covering. Says it all. The lad is a passenger in this side and is a huge part of the problem. I’m done defending him and can’t agree with any posts implying he’s hard done by or just not being used correctly. I’ve seen enough with my own eyes.

One of the worst central midfielders I’ve seen at this club for a long time.

He frustrated me as much as he frustrated you but he like Holgate is playing a position/role that doesn't suit him. I think if we continue with the 4-3-3 we need to accept there is a few players in the squad it will not suit. Gomes is one of them.
The formation shouldn’t be the issue as to whether he has a good game or not, which it isn’t, the problem is that he offers nothing and often over hits final passes, gives fouls away, almost nearly always gets booked and that has been shown to be the case over a period of time now.

I'm not saying he's hard done by I'm just giving mitigating circumstances. I must not put myself across very well as a few pages back someone else was criticising me for being too harsh. I'm just trying to be balanced. In my opinion if everyone is fit he is my 7th choice midfielder he would be behind Delph and Gbamin if they were available.

The formation is important. I think when Richarlison plays on the left side of a front 3 he is a far better player than he would be if he played on the left side of a midfield 4 in a 4-4-2.

Wasn’t aiming that at you I just meant in general. People who cry sympathy for him. He’s a professional footballer paid thousands to do a job and he doesn’t do it very well. The role he has in the side most players could do. He has no outstanding qualities.

If you were an oppositions club looking to sign him you’d look at his performances at Everton and think well he doesn’t offer anything.

Hopefully we’ll find a club in Spain that will sign him on his Valencia reputation many years ago. If we are lucky!

I think £13 million is his book price. I would take that and see if we can find a gem elsewhere but if he stays his performances will always be indifferent. He fits the bill of that 2nd Brands/Silva summer where they bought players for a set system. Unfortunately we have moved away from that system.

He can’t seem to pass or tackle any more so I’m not really sure why he’s on the pitch ahead of Onyango. If any of the young lads are worse than Gomes is playing right now then they shouldn’t be professional footballers.

Its annoying because he can be a great footballer to watch but I dont think we have enough movement or the right players in our squad for him to shine

Behind Delph? My friend, I would be ahead of Delph and I'm in my seventies!

I think in this system if Delph wasn't made of straw he would be a better option. He is an awful man but if you are assessing on suitability he edge's it. I would however jettison Delph rather than Gomes if we managed to get someone in.

So infuriated with this bloke. I can count on one hand the number of decent performances he’s had.

the league is to quick for him. He spends the majority of the game letting players go past him and then running like he’s stuck in quick drying cement.

no way he’s the answer to a team with aspirations of top 6. Playing him is a liability more than an asset.
