ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Perhaps that Man City Scouting Documents they stole only run from 2017 to 2019 and now they are back to their usual buy shìte for daft money and big them up as the greatest thing to touch a ball
City most definately had VVD on the radar and in their sites. That much I do know.
(but then again possibly so did other clubs). However, it maybe that their recruitment
around that time was excellent was just a coincidence as you say?

He has a face only a mother could love. Or in terms of football, if he your manager you love him but everyone else sees the truth. He only gets the love in he gets because he the RS manager.

Wonder if Brenda will toe the party line this weekend and let them win
Might see it as an audition for a return?

How many other people can say that they have managed Liverpool and won at Anfield this year?

He’s more likely to pass the audition by rolling over and letting them win. Imagine thinking the cult would allow him back in there if he beat them and stamped out the remaining dying embers of their title challenge.

I recall City being linked.

At the time he was late 20's, very expensive and I feel he was quite injury prone at Southampton.

Probably thought of him as an expensive stop gap unreliable because of fitness. Which would be sensible for a club who are painted as throwing money around without thought.

@catcherintherye what bids did they have for Firminho, Salah, Mane?

Where im dumbfounded is that he knows 2 of those front 3 rely on pace and are now 29 and will only lose pace from here.

Also he knows that aside from Gomez (injury prone) he doesnt have a CB who is top class to play alongside VVD.

On paper Thiago made sense. He could slow the pace down in games they were winning and/or change the style to keep opposition teams guessing.

It strikes me though that Jota is sub par for a title challenge and Thiago will lose value.

Why didnt he try and move on the front 3 for huge fees, take a step back one season while bedding in 4 or 5 super u25 players and start a new rebuild off?

As it is, theyve now got a 29+ year old front 3...VVD is 29...henderson is 30...thiago 30 in a couple of months.

Theres only one way this team is going and thats downhill unless they spend £200mil on it...and increase the huge wage bill.

Their young players arent good enough now as theyve sold the best prospects (bar one player)...

Its pure stupidity and short term by Klopp unless he was aiming at 1 title or run in champs league with injury luck this season -- then leave in the summer to manage Germany?

Btw what did you mean about defensive ability / IQ with Gomez/Godfrey?

I don't think there's ever been a serious bidder or interest for Salah until recently. Most felt he would be out of reach.
Bayern held a brief interest in Firmino, but very much as a backup to Levandovski. Liverpool pitched around £80m Bayern were nowhere near that figure. Probably looking in the region of what Liverpool paid with a bit on top.
Mane 2 summer ago they tried to move to Madrid. They quoted them something insane like £100m with a few add ons (Coutinho level). Real Madrid had pitched him at £50-£60m level and felt Liverpool were asking for Salah money and just moved on. I suspect they could have got to £70-£75m but no more. This was for Mane, pre pandemic, at age 27, not 29.

Nobody else has shown any kind of serious interest above those offers. I think a lot of people saw the £100m that Barca overpaid for their best player Coutinho, saw it was a poor deal, and have backed away.

I'm not sure what's happened with Klopp, but somewhere along the line he has broken with the longer term planning and really dragged his heels. There could be lots of reasons why.

As for defensive IQ, I suppose I mean the old fashioned bread and butter defending, blocks, headers, clearances, positioning etc. I think Godfrey is in advance of Gomez on that (who's positioning and awareness is pretty woeful) but his speed gets him out of some of those scenarios, but it's still a bit of a weakness to be worked on for me. He is better than Gomez for this and probably got more ability to learn and improve too, being that he's a fair bit younger. To me, Godfrey still plays a bit like a midfielder in defence in how he approaches certain situations.

No because his behaviour has been the same since he walked through the door there 5 years ago.
The mask slipped when he charged onto the pitch after the derby and also was on the point of offering out a 14 year old ballboy. It is sad about his Mum and I'm sorry for him for that. But I still think he's a horrible person.

I agree he is a bell-end but I would say it is the reason he has been more so lately. And understandably so. Imagine not being able to go to your own mums funeral. His head must be up the wall. I know mine would.
A lot of people have been unable to go to loved ones funerals...he is hardly alone. Im only surprised he hasn't managed a famous/connected person exception to the rules.

That being said, to be more sympathetic, My dad died over the summer from cancer, and I am grateful for the fact every day that he lived in a place (Arizona) that allowed for me to visit with him often in the last few months and to be there at the funeral to be with my mother. Not everybody has been so lucky...I know exactly how lucky I am.

Once they won the title last season that would have been the perfect time to revamp the team. However due to their poor planning and the pandemic theyve really made an unforgivable error which will be compounded into a fatal one if they finish outside of the top 4.

That £70mil they spent on Jota + Thiago looks like madness now. They should have tried to move on Salah, Mane and Firminho (all 3!!!) for £60mil each last summer and then used the £250mil on 5 new u25 players across the team...

A step back to take several steps forward would have made far more sense and really kept them near the top for a few years to come.

Its Barcelona level poor planning.

Just imagine if they finish 5th (or worse) then they will have shot themselves in the foot with little strategy or prospect of getting into the top 4 next season.

As for Godfrey, i think he'll need a solid preseason with Ancelotti and the rest of the team to create and build a structure and plan going forward now alot of building blocks are in place.

This and the following summer should really push us up a level.
