ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Van Dijk is finished at the top. 30 he'll be when he gets back fitness. And his ACL will be weakened.

A couple of my red mates (decent reds in as far as there can be) seem quite shocked at the suggestion he might not return the same player he was. I don't think they have any idea of the impact of an ACL. I mean he might do, but they would be very lucky if he did.

Remind them about Micheal Owen, when his hamstring went "ping" and he lost his speed he was never the same again.

Jagielka was younger when he did his and probably quicker in his prime than Van Dijk was. Jags came back to a decent level but he was never lightning quick anymore. There’s no comparison in my eyes between the centreback we had pre 2009 and the one after it. Same with Arteta, he lost that half yard that made him dangerous once he did his cruciate. He effectively jogged through the rest of his career at Arsenal.

I always thought VVD is prone to a ball over the top and a bit of a slow turner in any case. If he turns to get himself in the right direction in future and places massive load on that knee it'll be an issue. It'll leave Klopp - if he retains VVD - having to rethink the position of the backline and maybe sit deeper.

As said there - rushing back with an ACL is not the thing to do.
He’s a very lucky boy to get two ACL’s and still get a career.
The surgery can make the knee really strong I believe if it’s successful.
But I’m sure it’s a mental thing with the pace.
Owen was mentioned earlier with regards to a hamstring injury and no way would he have gone full pelt again like he did as a kid. Too much money involved for the fella.

Mental scars as well having witnessed your own funeral.

I think a central defender having it is a major issue, more than an attacker. Turning and chasing upfront and not having the explosive power you had before and doing it at the back have different consequences. VVD is bound to be stretched as a defender and place his knee under a lot of stress in order to turn and try and chase a runaway forward.

As said above, I think he'll have to sit deeper, and that changes how a team plays.
