I am not buying this tripe that all 7 hawk eye cameras were blocked from seeing the ball/line.

What about the one they always show from the crossbar? Someone didnt turn it on, or turned if off by accident, and they cant bear to admit it.

What I find peculiar is that they don't use this angle and/or camera.

Also, I maybe wrong, but I thought there was supposed to be a microchip in the ball that activated the refs watch when it crossed the line. With them using so many balls, perhaps there wasnt one in it?

I dunno mate. Like, I assume they train with the same ball as a match ball; does every ball have a chip in it? Villa were told to have say 20 balls available, so just raided the training ground?

Which begs the question, how on earth can you make an official ball to different standards? Are they not training with the same balls they play with?

Obviioulsy we're just speculating. I'm sure once the Premier League Officials Group produce a timely and comprehensive review of what went wrong and how they will make sure it can't happen again. After all, they're noted for their transparency and willingness to learn.

Sommet aint right thats for sure. Hawk eye themselves said it had been used in 9000 matches and this is the only time it didnt work. And it wasnt even a borderline one on review.

So I can only conclude that it failed cos it was either the wrong ball, or it wasnt on.

I suppose it depends on "which teams line the ball has crossed", the derby on Sunday has just crossed my mind.

100% football has turned so pathetic that people can't hold their hands up and say they made a mistake. What i hate is all these refs coming out now saying they were wrong with decisions they made in our Derby, i accept mistakes, but it's poor that they feel they can't admit it until years later after they've retired.

Just admit it was human error here, don't cop out and blame the tech, because before you know it they'll get rid of the only bit of tech that's actually worked in football. You can't tell me hawk eye works perfectly in every sport but football.

Its really weird isn't.

Either a really fringe case bug in their software which analyses the video data (which is possible), or as you say, some of the cameras weren't actually switched on or the signal wasn't getting back somehow.

As a software developer I'll blame the hardware, knowing full well its probably the software but that'll buy me some extra time in tracking down the problem.

There are two basic technologies high speed cameras positioned in the Stadium and magnetic field based systems.

Hawkeye, Goal control and goal minder use high speed cameras whilst Cairos and Goal ref used magnetic field systems. It is the magnetic field systems are the ones that have sensors with Cairos using a sensor in a special Adidas ball and goal ref having sensors in the goal frame. The chip in a ball is Adidas technology whilst the Premier League uses Nike match balls.

Of the two technologies the high speed cameras are more accurate.

That is a TV camera, and I am not sure it actually shows definitively that the whole of the ball has crossed the line. Obviously other angles clearly show that the ball crossed the line.
